What I found is that the research funding is basically given to researchers. It is a closed group. To put it another way, you have to know someone. But someone did the study anyway in Sweden. This is one relatively small area of study, and luckily - someone cared enough to take a look.

Like you mention, I suspect this problem is probably very large and in many areas.

I would also add - and I don't have any data for this - but I suspect the administrative burden placed on researchers is much to blame.

I used to try and love to do research. I haven't even considered it in years because it is just too damn hard to do even the simplest project. It is absolutely ridiculous.

over regulation limits social progress in every part of life including science. We could take better care of patients, if ridiculous hoops weren't required for simple studies.

this story should also include the problems with most fake medical research - hubris and $$$.

in the US, the vast majority of researchers do not get fame or adulation. but an R01 or an assistant professorship may be enough to entice someone to publish a fake study.


imo, if we did not have regulation, even more bogus studies would appear. it seems that most of these bogus studies seem to involve socially relevant topics - alzheimers, autism - but could involve anything that could be influenced by $$$.


it is important when reviewing each study to also check the authors. and unless one wants to go dpwn a rabbit hole with each article, stick to esteemed journals.
