Hello ladies and gentlemen. I'm a long time lurker, first time poster and finally ponied up some courage to ask a few questions (specifically towards UTEP). I've applied to a couple schools the last two years and pretty well versed in the whole application process.

For those who have applied/interviewed/accepted, how would you describe the application process? I've read that there are different dates for interviews for early and later applicants. Also, PTCAS lists that UTEP does not do interviews...but found that some have interviewed...so a little clarity would be nice.

Also looking at the acceptances for instate vs out-of-state, it appears that 92% of students are from Texas. I am an out of state applicant and unsure of how much that will play into the admissions process.

I've spent the better part of three years researching various school and this seems to have everything I want in a program. If anyone has any insight into this program I would love to discuss the program and El Paso.

Interviews: the only way to be sure is to call up the school and get the info from the horse's mouth.

If it's indeed true that 92% of the accepted students are Texas residents, I wouldn't put all my eggs in that basket if I were you. Either move to TX and become a resident, or blow the GRE/GPA/LOR out of the water.

Texas schools generally preference to in-state as far as what I've heard, but not something I know a lot about. I would highly recommend calling each TX school you want to apply to and asking what your realistic chances of getting a look would be before you spend a bunch of time and money applying. TX mostly doesn't use PTCAS, so it can be a lot of work.

Hi!

So I applied to UTEP and wad in very close contact with Dr. Loretta Dillon (I would email her she is wonderful ). I was wait listed unfortunately -but got accepted to my dream program. A friend of mine who lives here in IL was waitlisted and was offered acceptance but declined. UTEP does not do interviews. In the past they did but this application cycle they did not. I believe it is a new policy that they are starting. Dr. Dillon told me that out of state students have a great chance of getting in just like state students. Its just that a majority of their applicants are from Texas.

UTEP is a wonderful program. They do a lot of work with minorities in the area. It is also fairly priced. PM me if you have questions I'll try and answer.

I wonder if this is the case at most TX schools. I know I thought briefly about applying in TX because the schools are so cheap, but was scared off because of the lack of PTCAS and the seemingly bad odds. I wonder if there are a lot of people who do the same.

So I did apply to UTEP this cycle and got accepted. I wasn't called to the interview but just got an email and phone call telling me I was accepted. I do have a friend who was called for an interview though😵. I guess what this means is that if you look REALLY good on paper they will pass on the interview. It's a bit confusing. They are very helpful though. I didn't have Technical Writing when I applied, which they require by the way, and they told me that since I had a good GREW score they were willing to overlook it. I hear it's a good school and would have gone there if I had only been accepted there but I was lucky enough to get accepted closer to home (TWU). The application process was very straight forward and they are one of the few schools in TX that handle their applications over PTCAS. Dr Dillion replies her emails fast and she was very patient with me the few times I called her. They don't have early decision and their deadline is around early Dec so if you apply early just be willing to wait. Hope this helped.

In my class of roughly 50 there are about 10 OOS students (approx 1/5 of the class). I think those are better odds.

I'm pretty sure this is the case at TWU as well. They probably don't get a lot of out of state applicants because they don't use PTCAS. I found their application process to be infinitely easier and less tedious than PTCAS, though.
