From a PM, anonymized... If I get permission from the PM'er, I'll reveal more details. The PM'er did not want the Step I score revealed. In addition, I've also proactively anonymized some more details without compromising the general thrust of the message, so the bracketed words are from me:
"My first two years of medical school were spent at an osteopathic med school. I realized early on that the DO degree would be a severe hindrance for a competitive residency (I had derm in mind since early in med school) so I spent considerable energy ensuring I was at the top of my class and well prepared to take Step 1. I also began to entertain thoughts of transferring to an allo med school.
"So, after my second year of med school, I took the year off and spent it doing a research fellowship at [a prestigious med school] in their [prestigious] derm department. I was fortunate to get a poster/abstract and a travel award to present at [an international prestigious scientific dermatology conference last year]. Overall, a nice experience.
"I was also able to land a transfer spot at a well-regarded state allo med school, which is where I am currently. I have honors in three rotations thus far, with medicine, surgery, and primary care to go.
"So, to sum up:
-First two years at an osteo school (top of my class, but not sure that matters much)
-[An extremely good Step I score]
-Basic science research year at [abovementioned prestigious derm dept], with an abstract/presentation/travel award to [international scientific derm conference]
-4 basic science pubs in another field
-Now at a well-regarded state allo school, with all honors thus far with med, surg, and primary care to go
"Once primary care begins this Spring, I plan to get involved in my school's derm dept., either was a research project or case report, or perhaps both.
"Interested in your opinion on my chances, and what you might suggest to improve them."
