Hi everyone,

This is my first post here. I’ve got a bit of an obscure question that I can’t seem to find a definitive answer to through searching alone. I’m hoping that some clever person out there may be able to shed a little light on the subject!?

There are two parts to my question.

Firstly: Are there any fundamental differences, in terms of how the body processes a synthesised drug based MAOI – such those used in certain Anti-depressants, compared to that of a naturally forming MAOI?

And secondly: Could anyone please tell me if there are any known contraindications concerning corticosteroids (Beclometasone dipropionate / Becotide 100), and a naturally forming MAO inhibitor?

Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Dylan

Gosh - this one has so many implications & comes a bit close to a personal request for medical information. Why would you want to know this?

If this is for some kind of school work, then your resources would be available in your school library.

Otherwise, I'm afraid you'd have to check with your physician or pharmacist since we can't offer personal medical advice here.

Hi sdn1977,

Thanks for the response.

I understand where you’re coming from with regards to providing medical advice - it's fair enough really! But from my stand point, I have actually asked my Doctor; I've spoken to the manufacturer of the medication in question, and I've researched a great deal into the subject over the past couple of weeks, and still... I don't feel like I've found any definitive answers. It's a bit of a minefield to say the least!

If you can't answer on a personal level, do you think you could lend any insight to the first question, which was: Are there any fundamental differences, in terms of how the body processes a synthesised drug based MAOI – such those used in certain Anti-depressants, compared to that of a naturally forming MAOI?

The reason that I ask is that I am travelling to the South American rain forest quite soon to take part in a ceremony called Ayahuasca. I didn't realise at the time of booking the trip that there would be possible health implications - which there potentially are. It turns out, Ayahuasca contains certain B-carboline alkaloids (natural forming MAOI's), that can, in some circumstances be contraindicated with certain foods and medications - beta 2 agonists included.

This is something I need to do, and the medical professionals I have asked haven’t provided me with sufficient information for me to feel confident in what I’m doing. I know perhaps this isn’t the ideal place to ask, and I apologise if it causes any offence; I just don’t know where else to seek information, if I’m completely honest - I’m at a loose end!

If you can help at all, that would be great; if not, no worries... I understand.

As indicated, SDN does not allow personal medical advice. While this is difficult for you given the difficulty in seeking advice from other sources, it is still necessary to close the thread. Perhaps a doctor more local to the South America rainforests would have more details.
