I'm a current pre-dentistry student at WVU, and I'm planning on applying here, but I would really like to relocate to Nashville. Meharry is the only dental school around Nashville, and I've heard it is geared toward minorities. Now what exactly is considered "minority"?

I'm a white male...come from middle-class family....parents are going through divorce which is most likely going to put my family in the low-income bracket...and i live in rural WV, which is considered a "disadvantage" to several undergraduate admissions committees, but does Meharry look at this or simply racial minorities?

My GPA is currently around 3.3....i haven't taken the DAT yet, but i expect to do well because i test well and i plan to study a few months before taking it. I'd guess 18-20 range.

Do i have a reasonable chance at Meharry? Does anyone know any admission statistics as far as caucasian students?

Not insulting the school or the students, but is there the risk of having too high of statistics...not saying that i do....just wondering.

Thanks! 🙂

Check predents.com. I am a minority and applied to Meharry with pretty good stats and got wait listed. As a matter of fact I got in two out-of -schools and my state school, but got wait listed to Meharry. I am not sure exactly what they look for. The only other dental school close is University of Tennessee Health Science Center which is in Memphis, Tennessee (about 3 hours away from Nashville). I was accepted there (my state school) and they have an extremely nice facility and great program. The only thing is that you probably need to establish residency in Tennessee because they generally don't take to many out-of-staters unless you are from Arkansas. PM me if you have any specific questions.

i'm asian and i got waitlisted for meharry. i really think it depends on if you fit EXACTLY what they are looking for like your mission in life, does it fit theirs? i saw 2 caucasian guys at my interview and me and another asian there too. so i think the majority of students accepted are africian americans, but there are other ethnic groups that are accepted. so like i said, it really depends if you fit everything the school wants....so read their website to get a better idea of their mission and services.

i just went back to Meharry's website and this is on their homepage:

Meharry Medical College exists to improve the health
and health care of minority and underserved
communities by offering excellent education and
training programs in the health sciences; placing
special emphasis on providing opportunities to people
of color and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds,
regardless of race or ethnicity; delivering high quality
health services; and conducting research that fosters
the elimination of health disparities.

You could say i'm DEFINITELY from an underserved community....higher poverty level with limited rural medical practices. Also, I plan to "settle" back in WV after dentistry school and a residency, if i do one.

So, i guess i have a chance of fitting what they want somewhat. I'll probably send an application down that way just to find out. There's no other way to know.

Thanks a lot for your posts. 🙂
