a question for psych docs

I know ssri and snri's have been around for a long time, Are they safe for maintenance use over long periods of time? im assuming probably not, unless patients can not tolerate them in which case i guess they would have not been a Tx option in the first place

kind of like the whole vioxx thing, Just curious
 
I know you want a psychiatrists opinion, but I can tell you that they generally are considered safe with the possible exception of paxil, and certain meds with comorbid medical conditions etc.
 
SSRIs as a class are considered safe for the most part. However also consider that even the safest meds have side effects and everyone involved in its use need to be aware of the warnings.

Paxil & Prozac out of all the SSRIs have the most amount of side effects. However these meds are still considered benign (in general).

Anyone taking an SSRI should though talk to their doc about it and do research on their own concerning this and any meds they are on.
