Are there many predental students who want to enter the school of dentistry to do basic research for a Phd?

Are there many predental students who want to enter the school of dentistry to do basic research for a Phd?

No one in my class entered with that intention, but I wouldn't be surprised if some went into research. Lots of our faculty members have a DDS/PhD. If you DO want that, you may also find yourself in academia as well. Go for it! Just don't sell your soul to a pharmeceutical company 😀

Of course I won't. I am a international student and want to know the situation. Every coin has to sides, maybe the advantage of doing research is easy for me to apply,right? 😛
I just heard that somebody goes for research to earn money for paying the fee of clinical study, which has no scolarship...I surely admit that's tough.
But it can be a choice I think. What do you think?

There was a guy in the class behind me that already had a PhD in biology specialty, taught in a Dental school and did Dental research that entered our school simply to get the DDS behind his name. He felt his research would be better received in the dental world if he completed dental school.

It must have worked because he is still in the research and teaching end of dentistry. To my knowledge he never treated a "real patient" in the real world.

BTW- This guy was a nice guy and worked hard, cursed the instructors, had a Friday beer with the guys, and got mediocre grades just like the rest of us.

But for an international student, it is difficult for him to apply a clinical study, so he has to choose research instead of it, especially for stu from asia. The government has to protect the best job.
