how common are events like these? do retail pharmacists have this on the back of their mind while they work? do they prepare for them in any specific way? the idea that this happens is a nightmare, and from just regular browsing through the Internet I've come across several stories like this.

Not that often. The shooting part, anyway. Usually its just brandish firearm, take loot, scamper off. Getting robbed happens daily all over the country in multiple pharmacies.

Nothing you can really do about it. It's an unfortunate manifestation of the destruction of American society.

Carrying a gun won't help. If someone wants you to die, you will die long before you can draw a weapon, take the safety off, and chamber a round. If someone's pointing a gun at me, center mass...there is no way in hell I attempt to draw my CCW.

Carrying guns isn't the answer...do you expect the FDA to take these drugs off the market? The DEA to essentially shut a major portion of itself down by making them illegal to dispense? We could just legalize heroin. That would take the crime and likely the violence out of it. But that ain't gonna happen.

Nah, the answer is rebuilding American society. But the **** is complicated. And America has no true leaders with power...

...I'll spare everyone an offtopic rant...

But you just hope when you get robbed (it will probably happen in your career...I was a 15 minute drive from it happening to me a few days ago...) that you don't get the oxyhead that has deeper issues and shoots before thinking.

Pharmacies are no more likely to be robbed than any other retail establishment.

As for thinking about it, I didn't think about it any more than I thought about my dad dying every time he walked out the door to go to work. He was a big-city firefighter for 35 years.

Well one way they could help prevent these robberies from happening is by making it LEGAL to shoot/kill a fleeing criminal.

They present gun and list of demands -> give them what they want -> they go to escape -> shoot them in the back.

geesh- you're violent

it's just too bad pharmacists have this kind of risk. i wonder what it would be like if the same risk existed for doctors!

imagine if only doctors could give out these kinds of substances. lol (the issue isn't really one to laugh at, at all...)

Every job has it's ups and downs. I'd be more upset if I were a tech because then the money isn't even worth the risk. And if I was on rotations getting robbed, I'd tell that robber that I'd kick his a** in heaven when he got there because I'm not getting paid at all...

Hey Boy Genius -- ever consider the unintended consequences of that?

Dude, you'd probably piss your pants and faint the second they left.

Well, he never said HE would do it. He said it would happen... I'm not necessarily confident that Sparda would shoot the robbers in the back; however, I'm very confident that there are some people who would.

And funny, I always picture the people pulling the "internet tough guy" accusation as the internet tough guys. Hm...

Personally, I always pictured the people pulling the "people pulling the "internet tough guy" accusation are themselves the "internet tough guys"" accusation as the internet tough guys.

Seriously though, I've been mugged about 5 times in the 24 years I've lived here in NYC (never at gunpoint). The first 2 times, I was like 12 and scared so I just gave it up. Other times, I had learned Martial Arts, and carried around pepper spray and 3 knives, so those muggings were averted through the use of a knife.

You carry around 3 knives?

Ok, seriously, you just make **** up for internet posting purposes, right?

I used to. I had one standard flip-action knife, one midget finger knife with a curved blade, and one of those long knives similar to what Brad Pitt's character carried in Inglorious Basterds (concealed under pants and with a calf strap). I don't have classes in Downtown Brooklyn at 9PM at night anymore so I only carry the standard one. I'm a bit of a knife/sword nut. I have quite a collection that I keep at home.

And I drive now. I keep a paintball pistol in my center console, and a knife in one of those slot compartments on the door.

Wow dude, you're such a troll. I mean, I see it plenty on other forums, but I never thought it'd happen on a PharmD forum... especially from somebody with a PharmD emblem.

If you don't like the guy, just let his posts go.

You must be new around here. Me and him are resident trolls.

Him and I would be the proper term. Unless you were going for the troll-speak "Me are troll."

Yo, Check-it. I'm here with none utta than my main mans praziquantel and he be's a resident grammar troll Aiiiiiight?

LOL! Trying to imitate Ali G. Last month I had the chance to work as an extra in Sasha Baron Cohen's new movie, "The Dictator". It's the restaurant scene.

So you're in it somewhere? Awesome! An episode of The Mentalist was shot partly in Davis and I was a few minutes late to be an extra "walking around" on F Street. I'm still waiting for my 15 minutes!!

Shouldn't it be "He and I" because you would say "He is a resident troll," not "him."

Yeah, working with this guys is fricking hilarious. I'm supposed to be part of an angry mob who is after his character, but it's very hard to keep an angry face on with how funny the guy is.
