To those who are in training or about to enter training:

Please join and support the ASA and please become politically involved in our field.

If we do not take control of our speciality, others will do so for us (just look at Medicare reimbursement for anesthesia compared to other specialties and its effect on academic departments). Too long have physicians stood on the sidelines while businessmen and lawyers have carved up our specialty.

Be proactive!

i'm only a MSIII....

but i completely agree with southernGas....i think most physicians are so overwhelmed by the intricacies of their field and trying to advance that they forget about being proactive. If we're (well i'm not there yet) not proactive then as southern Gas implies, medicine will go down the tubes.

so i completely agree be proactive!

In case you are interested, you can become a student member of the ASA. There is even now a special medical student panel as part of the ASA that became approved at the last national meeting.

Yeah... I would definetely suggest joining ASA even as a student. Membership it only $10, it takes 5 seconds to fill out the form, and you get a ton of free stuff and perks, and it adds another line on your CV.

Here's the link:

even as someone heading into ophthalmology, i completely support your perspectives of holding firm your chosen profession... look at the ophtho and optometry forums and see the kind of hell we as MD's have to go through... if i can recall correctly, a little something call CRNA's are chomping at the bit to get a bigger piece of the pie...
