Just got a letter in the mail today saying that I had pass. 😀 For those who are still waiting for results, here's a brief review of my experience. If others have similar tips, just post in a similar format:
Overall
I walked out of exam w/ an uneasy feeling that I'd fail. My medschool doesn't have an OSCE...so u could say I came into exam pretty blinded and totally unfamiliar w/ the fundaments of standardized patients. I used First Aid CS. Read through it a few times...I kept pushing back test date.
The Good
-I washed my hands before/after examining patient, alcohol cleaned my stethascope.
-Draped patients before I sat on stool.
-I established good rapport w/ 10/12 patients.
-Sounded sincere, emphathetic, and even apologetic at times
-Made sure patient understood what was going on
The unclear:
-I kept stethascope on my neck the whole time.
-I was too overzealous w/ my physical dx skills and ended up listing a differential (5th on my list) along w/ associated test that didn't quite relate to the case my standardized patient was trying to portray; but the addition was due to me finding an actual physical finding on the patient that was real, and not acting.
-Didn't document PE tests that I do on everyone but wasn't necessarily pertinent to case (i.e. membranes moist, PERRL, no bruits)
The bad:
-I was probably rushing the auscultation part of exam. i.e. 2s for each spot on chest isn't really enough time for a breath/heartbeat.
-sloppy when assessing jvd
-Missed diagnosis on 2 cases (but did list them on the differential dx)
-Missed an important lab test on two cases (not the main test, but important for ruling out other possibilities).
-Got a patient angry by the abrupt manner in which i asked: "So Why..."....When they raised their voice, i just backed off and said..."oh....ok"...and moved on. The patient got angry another time during interview...
-Didn't do full neuro exam
-Repeated the same questions a few times
-My written note was getting sloppy w/ tons of cross out marks so I switched to typing.
-Didn't have consistent format when typing up my notes...i.e. include PMH/allergies in paragraphy of HPI, or listing after the HPI?
