\ currently with a sGPA of 2.5 and a cGPA of 3.1 (cGPA should be getting higher after this semester).

I haven't been doing too well in my pre-med classes...current grades:

General chem : C
General chem Lab: A
Organic chem : C-
Organic chem lab: A-

I am currently retaking organic chemistry because I felt I was not able to learn it well enough the first time

I am also taking Physics - and I am not doing very well (probably will end up with a C)

I am a science major. I come from a very disadvantaged background. I am the first female in my entire family (extended family included) to go to college, and my dad is the only one who works in my family.

I have had a lot of family problems that led to my poor grades, especially last semester with a close family friend passing away.

I know I would not make a strong candidate for med school if i apply straight, so what other options are available to me (if i start doing better in my science classes)?

Would I make a strong applicant for a post-bac at a UC?

or should I try to get an MPH?

thank you so much!

If you are distracted by family problems, consider taking time off from school until your head is back in the game.

An MPH will not improve your candidacy for med school. You need to prove capability in the hard sciences.

If you can qualify for an SMP (Special Masters Program, usually needs an MCAT of 30+ and a cGPA >3.0 ) that would help. They are expensive.

You might consider applying to DO med schools where only the last grade earned counts when you retake a course.

1) re-take the O-Chem lectures.
2) Ace everything from now on.
3) Seek out your school's counseling services to help your coping skills.
4) Seek out your school's education specialist/learning center to improve your study skills.
5) WAY too early to start thinking about post-bac fixes to your situation. In my opinion, unless you want an alternative/backup career in public health, better to do an SMP than an MPH.
