Another long nite of inhouse call, so I figured I would try to embrace the new technology and watch some videos on robotic cardiac surgery.
I think that we should all keep an open mind on making surgery better, but there has to be a point where maybe somethings just arent meant to be..

like this.

(i know its a long video, but you can fastforward quickly to get the point)

look how long it takes and how awkward the views and movements of the machine are. (unlike the robot mitrals, where I have to admit it looks pretty slick)

This is one of the most bizarre things I have ever seen that someone would try to do- on-pump, arrested heart single vessel lima-lad. why not take the lima with the robot and then make a small incision without spreading the ribs to do an off-pump lima-lad under direct vision/control.

I didn't watch the video but trust me I will.

But I will respond anyway based on what I think is going on (forgive me if I'm way off). Because, as an attending of mine always says...the thing that separates me from the guy down the block is the incision. Thats all the patient sees, thats all the patient cares about. People don't understand. If you can spend three times as long and make four times as much for a private pay patient. **** yeah. I'd do it. And if you wouldnt...good for you, more money for me.

Whats that you say? longer time on the table is bad for the patient? so is a stent that doesnt last as long as a bypass! But patients don't care, they want a little scar.
