A very bad grade

Ok, so I am a junior and just took the first half of organic chemistry and had a 3.82 overall GPA before that class, but the class was made ridiculously hard by this new professor and the final was almost incomprehensible... I made a D in the class. I am transferring to another university to complete my junior and senior year, but my question is this. I am thinking about retaking the course to get my B or A for the course and at that university it will replace my old grade completely, but it doesnt wipe the old grade off the transcripts.. so my question is: When I fill out all the applications for medical/DO school, will my old grade be figured into my GPA or will they only use my new grade to figure in my GPA? or a combination of both?

For DO schools, and DO schools only, will your new grade count. Your old grade will not be factored into your GPA. However, if you apply to allopathic schools, you'll have them averaged.

most universities won't transfer or accept the transfer of grades lower than a C. Find out what the schools' policies are on transfering grades. It should be in like the registration manual. It might not count at all. When you transfer only your GPA follows. The med schools will get the last schools transcript. Well thats the way it works in my state. Hopefully yours works that way too???

There's medical school, then there's DO school........🙄

You're going to have to take Organic over again. Most medical schools do not consider a D to be a fulfillment of the prerequisite. But the good news is that if you do take it over again and do well, AACOMAS will toss out the old grade and replace it with the new grade when it calculates your GPA. Both courses and grades will be listed, but only the retaken grade counts.

Careful here. Yes, for some undergrad schools the grade may not follow you for their purposes. BUT, when it comes time to send transcripts to AACOMAS and AMCAS, you MUST send them all your transcripts from every single school that you have ever attend, even if your new school puts them on your transcript as transfer credits.

If only applying to DO schools: Only newest grade applies in GPA
If M.D. school: both get averaged in

Of course it'll show up in either case in your transcript. But for 3.0 cutoffs, etc. the GPA will not be affected by the lower grade.
