I am a non-traditional student applying for 2013. I am sticking to DO schools and have a pretty sub-par overall: cGPA: 2.9, sGPA: 3.3, MCAT (1st attempt): 23O (7 PS, 6 VR, 10 BS), re-taking MCAT on Sept. 7, 2012.

I got my bachelor of arts in Psychology from the University of Nebraska in 2008, spent 3 years working as a Behavior tech in a youth mental hospital, and basically have been working full-time since I became a post-bac, pre-med in 2010 taking all of the pre-med science courses.

I have a few questions/looking for any advice. I am afraid to submit my AACOMAS application until I get my 2nd MCAT score back but that will not be until October 8. Should I wait until I get my 2nd score back to submit my AACOMAS app?

Also, I have all of my letters of reccomendation lined up but should I wait until I receive my secondary apps to request them to be sent?

Any advice helps. I don't care how negative it is!

Sit this year out. With a low gpa/low first mcat and your chances ride on a mcat score that wont come way late (till october) you are setting yourself up for failure man.

Thanks for the honest response. Would it help to re-take a couple of courses? My rough spots in my pre-med sciences are definitely Gen chem I & II which are both C +'s but received the following grades for the rest: Bio I & II--> B+ for both, Physics I & II--> B & A-, respectively, Orgo I--> B-, Genetics--> A, Biochemistry--> B+.

yeah def, retake Cs and try to bring your gpa as high as you can. Also make sure you study hard for the mcat, do well, and youll be in a good spot next cycle. Also if you wait it gives you time to really build your ECs.

Retake both gen chems, orgo 1, and physics 1. Get A's in them. Study your *****$ off for the MCAT and aim for 28+

Do either of you think it would be worth it to submit my AACOMAS app once I receive my MCAT re-take score in early october (if its upper 20's)? The schools that I have on my list are Rocky Vista, University of New England, Des Moines, KCUMB, Marian (new Indiannapolis school), TOURO NY, and Western?

I am fine with waiting until 2013 cycle and taking more courses and/or re-taking a couple but do I at least have a chance with my profile?

October MCAT is not very late for many DO schools. I personally know people who got into MD/DO schools with not so stellar october MCAT score with average ECs and LORs. Your problem is your cGPA. If it were 3.3, I think you would have a great shot getting in some DO schools with an upper 20's MCAT. However, I think you still should go for it.

I appreciate the input. My cGPA is definitely a blemish since I did so poorly in my undergrad course work from 2004-2008 and have done just fine with my pre-med sciences since 2010. I figure I have nothing to lose except for some application money.
