Hey,

I am a Canadian applicant - my AACOMAS application was just undelivered as I listed my Biology and Chemistry courses as 4 credits per semester whereas my (University of Western Ontario) transcript states that a semester is worth 3 hours credit only and the transcript does not refer to lab hours. As far as I know, none of the Canadian Universities state credits for lab hours in the transcripts. How do I fix my application while ensuring that my lab hours are accounted for?

Thank you!

Did you put (with Lab) after the name of the course?

No, I did not put (with Lab) after the name of the course.

I called AACOMAS and explained them the situation- they said they will get back to me.

Do you think correcting the description ( adding " With Lab") is going to be sufficient?

Thanks,

Yes. That's what it tells you to do in the instructions. It's what I did, worked out fine for me.

I got verified without putting "with lab" or anything like that. I think they can tell which classes are labs because they are usually 4-5 credit hours.

OOOOH I just re read it. Your classes with lab only consist of 3 credit hours? That could be a problem reaching pre reqs because many schools require 8 hrs of organic and gen chem.

For my school if we have a pre-req class that had lab with 3 credit hours, the registrar makes a point to put "Gen Chem W Lab" on the transcript.

Any other pre-req of ours is usually 4 to 5 credit hours and thats how AACOMAS determines if it had a lab or not.

Also I just want to point out that courses with labs should be more credit hours... i hated labs.

My micro lab met twice a week and we lectured twice a week, meeting for a total of 6 hrs and 40 minutes a week, getting 4 credit hours. <.<

See, isnt that bull****? And then when you have 2-3 of these classes, you spend an asinine amount of time doing completely useless lab busy work

Can some one advise how to resubmit the application to AACOMAS please?

Option 1: Add " With Lab" to the course description and claim 4 credits- risk is that application may again be undelivered saying hours claimed do not match with the transcript.

Option 2: Add " With Lab" to the course description and claim 3 credits- risk is that I will not meet the requirement of required course hours. Further, schools may interpret that along with lab, courses are worth 3 hours credit only.

Option 3: Just change the credit hours from 4 to 3 (with out adding " With Lab" to the course description )and resubmit. Risk is that schools may ask why I did not indicate my course included lab.

Any feedback from candidates that have gone through this will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Maybe this is how it is most places but my ochem labs were 4 hours and were only worth 1 credit....and that time didn't include all the pre- and post- lab work...not to mention all the lab fees...robbery if you ask me

Do you only have 3 credit hours? Don't make up credit hours that you don't have.

why cant you just look at your transcript and enter it in exactly how its listed?

I'm a student who went to a Canadian university and I have the exact same problem. Many Canadian schools do not differentiate between lab and non-lab courses in terms of the credits they award. All our General chem, biology, orgo courses etc have labs, but we still get 0.5 credits (the equivalent of 3 semester hours). Thus by simply looking at the transcript its not possible to identify which courses have lab and which do not.
The thing is, I do not know of any Canadian university that teaches these fundamental science courses without labs included in them.

I would write them exactly as they are on your transcript. If/once you are accepted, the school should verify that you've met the requirements, and you can discuss the issue with them... It's easier to come to an agreement with one school using course catalogs, etc than the intermediate. At least that's my plan.

You need to do what AACOMAS requires to get past review, but I'm certain that schools find these issues frequently enough.
