hello all, I just wanted to ask you guys if you can tell me why the AACOMAS science GPA is different from the AMCAS science GPA?

not that I'm complaining or anything. It shows that AACOMAS has me at a 3.38 overall science GPA, with a 3.88 post bac GPA and AMCAS has me at a 3.30 science gpa with a 3.78 post bac GPA....

so my app was finally mailed yesterday, how long does it usually take to receive news from the DO schools?

I applied to COMP, Touro, Ohio, New Jersey, Nova, and Michigan State.

Mine sent as well on Dec 1st...AMCAS did the same thing with my app. It depends on what they interprete as science, non-science, and audit grades. AACOMAS differs in interpretation.

AMCAS Science GPA 3.36, overall 3.71
AACOMAS Science GPA 3.53, overall 3.67

Transcript GPA 3.73 ...go figure!

I agree, they look at some classes differently and put them into different groupings. I cant remember what is done differently.

The DO schools are MUCH faster than the MD schools. I think most people have heard back about secondaries anywhere from 3 days to 3 weeks. Get ready to fill out secondaries.

Oh, since it is pretty late into the cycle, I can't stress enough to get everything into the schools ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks for the info guys. now another favor if it's not too much trouble. I know I'm already behind on secondaries, so for those of you who have already received secondaries from COMP, Touro, New Jersey, Nova, Michigan State and Ohio, can you hook me up with the secondary questions so that I can start working on them, in that way when/if I get them they'll be ready to go and I can save some time with those. thank you! 🙂

May I ask, why did you wait so long?

Your GPA is fair. How is your MCAT? Are you an interesting application beyond stats? Life experiences? Do you have direct experience with Osteopathic Docs? Letters?

I wouldn't get discouraged. I have a friend that didn't get complete until just before the deadline at PCOM last year. I think it was Jan or Feb, really late. He still got a spot. It was tight because the class was pretty much filled, but he got in. So, good luck. And remain positive. If you can be proactive and show a strong interest. Are you located near a school, visit. Talk to an admissions person. Let them know how interested you are? If you do know a doc, if he went to that school, get a letter from her.

Are you *sure* both transcripts were audited properly? When AMCAS sent me a notice that mine had finished being processed, I checked it and discovered that they had marked two of my classes as repeats even though they were not. It dropped my GPA by a few tenths of a point.

It could just be because they consider different classes in different categories, but it's always best to double-check!

BTW, I think the only essay on the Ohio app is about why you want to be a DO & specifically why OU.

holas, thank you for your responses peeps. to answer to LP1CW. I took the august MCAT so I just wanted to focus on that during the summer. I turned in my ACMAS primary app around the middle of september and after spending about $800 bucks on that I had to wait a little while to turn in my AACOM primary which was sent around the middle of october. My transcripts got there around early october, BUT they lost one of them, as a result I had to resend it and that caused a 3 WEEK delay (they got it late october 10/27/03 to be exact). Anyways just go processed two days ago and waiting to hear some news now.

My numbers are decent for DO:

took MCAT three times and all of them have stayed pretty much the same. I know my verbal score might raise a red flag. (got a 6 two years ago, can't seem to get it passed a 7 🙁 ) my science MCAT scores are strong 9s and 10s in my MCATs. On the average of my 3 MCATs I am applying with a 25 MCAT (7,9,9).

Science GPA: 3.38, Post Bac Science GPA: 3.88

I have tons of clinical, research, and community service. Got letters of rec from each one of my activities to show commitment to underserved health care.

I also FINALLY got my DO letter from a Western/COMP alumni. He was in the admissions committee for the past few years and told me that my application is strong enough for COMP and some lower tier MD schools.

Honestly, I just want to get in. My goal is to become a primary care physician, therefore going DO or MD does not matter to me. Shadowing him has made me realize that Osteopathic medicine is quite interesting and I'm really excited about it.

Hoping for something good come out of the application process this year!

If anyone has any advice/info on how I should approach the application process for the DO schools I mentioned, please hit me up.

Oh, and I'm applying as a disadvantaged applicant (not a URM) although I don't know how DO schools look at that.

Hey Dr. Don,

You must be from CA as well. I also want to be a primary care physician. I shadowed an FP who graduated from COMP and received an LOR from him.

I believe having a letter from an alum from COMP is important particularly for COMP. At my interview, my interviewer knew the DO I shadowed because he used to work under my inteviewer. He even told me to say hi to him. I think graduates at COMP are pretty close in that sense and they keep in touch. I also believe that helped me out, and it will probably help you out too.

Your numbers are good so you have a good chance at COMP. However, if you had applied earlier, your chances would have been better. It doesn't matter though.

I will probably be heading out to COMP next year as well. I wish you luck and if you do decide to attend a DO school, go to COMP. 🙂

YES!!! Finally got my first DO secondary!!! 😀

However, I just want to ask you guys who applied to Ohio: How did you feel about signing that 5 year contract to practice medicine in Ohio after residency?

At this point in my life, I will do just about anything to get in to Medical School, therefore, I'M GOING TO SIGN IT, because you never know what can happen in 5-6 years.

But I must say that the whole "contract" thing is kind of imposing, but I guess it's their right, afterall Ohio is a state school.

I'm going to try to send everything in by tomorrow morning. Good luck you all
