i am a re-applicant. i applied to several one-year masters programs in case i didn't get into dental school this year. however, since i applied late to the masters programs, they are NOW reviewing my application. i want to put on my dental apps that i am doing a masters program, but i don't know how long it would take for the masters program to make a decision about my status. i also want to submit my application in early june. AADSAS says once you submit your app, you cannot change the "colleges attended" section. what should i do? thank you.

i wouldnt put anything in the "colleges attended" section unless you get an acceptance in hand. But that's what the personal statement is for, explain your path, and hope you end up attending one of the masters. I think early November you can add new coursework to your file.

I would wait until you find out as long as it is not to far into June. I am having a tough time deciding between JHU and UMDNJ. I need to make a decision this weekend so I can submit my application to AADSAS.

I agree with the other posters. The alternative, but it is risky, is to see if they can speed up your application review at the grad schools you applied to and explain your situation. It is risky though. It may look as though your goal is not getting an MS. We know it, but the school may not want to accept it.

how are you choosing between the two programs? I applied to UMDNJ quite recently and it looks like an excellent program? BTW, how long did it take them to give you a decision?

I have never really been to Newark (just the airport). That said, is it a 'happenin' place? I know it's close to manhattan so that's cool.
Looking forward to your insight.

I currently work in a research lab, so with the JHU program being part-time, I would be able to take the first two or three semesters online and continue with the research before moving to Baltimore to finish the program. JHU seems to have the wow factor, which might be nice to catch the AdCom’s eye.

UMDNJ is full-time which means you double the possible number of A's you can get in a semester compared to going part-time at JHU. This is nice as of course the reason I am not already in dental school is because my early years severely jacked my GPA. In addition, the opportunity to take D1 classes is a plus, allowing the AdComs to compare your performance directly with those of your future peers. Which is better (aka provide me with best leg up in my application), research and JHU or fulltime UMDNJ with dental physiology? I am having trouble deciding, but I know I have to pick one very soon.

As far as Newark is concerned, it is all right I guess I lived in NJ before moving to the Midwest in high school. At that point it might not have been as bad as say Patterson, East Orange (or West I can't remember which is worse), or Camden, but it still was not the greatest city. That though, was a long time ago and they have done a lot of revitalization since then. My cousin just graduated from UMDNJ's med school and she liked the area around the school if that means anything. Also, it took about three weeks to hear back from the school.

i did the GSBS program at UMDNJ last year, have finished 26 credits and just need 4 more to get my MBS (to get your MS you have to do 26 credits of coursework and 4 credits of research thesis). It's a good program, and you can take dental physiology and dental biochemistry (well biochem if you do well in physio). But Newark is definitely NOT a nice area to be in and that is the main drawback of UMDNJ GSBS, UMDNJ Dental School, and UMDNJ Medical School. However you can live in surrounding areas that are nice and commute from there, and the dorms are not bad. But in terms of nice surroundings and things socially to do around there, definitely not so good.

Hey, did you by any chance take the course Molecular Virology? 🙂
