So in the ADEA Official Guide to Dental Schools 2013 it lists for some schools...

For example, for Maryland, it says...

"Fee for application: Yes, submitted at same time as AADSAS application: $85"

Further down it says "secondary or supplemental application required: Yes, by invitation"

Is this $85 essentially the secondary application fee or no? If it is, I don't understand why the secondary application is sent "by invitation" when you have to pay the $85 when you e-submit AADSAS.

And just to clarify... these fees are separate from AADSAS fees, correct?

The processing fee for the 2014 ADEA AADSAS application is
• $244 for the first dental school plus
• $90 for each additional school.

Therefore, the $85 fee is additional?

Yea the secondary application fee is separate and mailed directly to the school. I would contact the school if you have a question on when to pay. Some schools will not ask for the secondary fee right away, while others will.

That secondary fee is separate from your aadsas fees. It's paid directly to the school, and you should pay it within a day or two of submitting your aadsas to any school that requires it. Almost all schools require a secondary FEE at time of submission. The secondary APP is something separate: some schools email you the secondary app invitation, others don't require it at all, and some expect you to automatically fill it out and mail it back.

Also, note that it'll say some schools don't have a secondary app, but they may have secondary requirements only listed on the school site. Pitt comes to mind specifically. They wanted me to mail in a picture of myself (listed on their website). Check each site for specifics!!

thanks for the info. so essentially some schools don't email you any info about secondary apps even if they have one, correct?

Best thing to do is to go to each schools website and look at their application procedures.

Wait seriously? So the AADSAS is $244 for the first application, $90 thereafter, so applying to 10 schools means you'll pay $1,054.

PLUS the secondary application fees ~$55-85 per school according ADEA handbook for a grand total of ~$1,600 to apply to 10 schools? Does that sound right to everyone?

Yes, hard to believe isn't it?

holy crap that's expensive. I guess I need to do really well on my DAT because I don't have the money to apply to 10 schools.

I heard from one student that the application fee drops below the $90 once you start applying for your 20th school on the AADSAS. Does anyone who applied know if this is true?

Yes. I remember Creighton being like this. I only knew about their secondary app by looking at the website. A lot of schools even say 'We assume serious applicants will take it upon themselves to complete and turn in the secondary app.'

Yep! It's expensive. Your best bet is to get one of those credit cards that gives travel points, because you'll need them come interview time (yet another expensive expenditure). I applied to 10 schools (so 1000 for AADSAS, and another 700 or so in secondary fees). 2 interviews were for schools near where I live thankfully, but the ones that required travel were around another 600 each, between airfare, lodging, food and car rental. I used expedia and saved a bundle.

people shouldn't put false ideas in the heads of others.

Yes, this is true. The first school on the list is the most expensive then the next ones have the same fee.
See here http://www.adea.org/dental_educatio...s/Pages/ADEAAADSASApplicationFeeSchedule.aspx

link above shows a $90 bounce for each school up to 65.
