Hm, so what if you're a member of a couple of professional organizations, say, american society of microbiologists, but all you do is...well, what everyone else does...attend yearly meetings and present your research. There is indeed a substantial amount of time that goes into preparation for those meetings, and some of them last close to a week.
As a student, you obviously can't hold a office position, but it still shows that you're involved.
So, do you still put that on the EC section?
