hi everyone

should i list activities such as shadowing at various dental offices as one experience or individual ones? the same question for the volunteer hours. i ask this question because we are only allowed ten spots for such details and i think i can fill out more then ten.

would like any advice.
thanks.
ps. i think i am gonna have a heart attack. damn this addmissions process.

What are you stressing for? You could list your extracurric's as:
-Plotting the violent overthrow of a small foreign government
-Primary planner for genocides in Rwanda and Bosnia
-Torturing small woodland creatures for fun and profit
-Mailing anthrax laden letters to Congress and the National Enquirer

And given your GPA and you'll still be guaranteed at least an interview. So relax.

Yeah well that GPA is going to mean nothing if I don't do well on the DAT's next month. I have been getting stinking 19's on my natural science totals.

I'm sure you'll do fine on your DAT. Besides it's not like with a 4.0 GPA you need to pull 22+'s to be competitive. I'd be willing to bet you'll do fine with "average" scores. 🙂 Overachieve a bit much? Relax....you're gonna do fine.

I could be wrong, but aren't there two separate questions, one for extracurrics and one for dental related experiences? in my mind shadowing is not an extracurricular activity. I would leave it off of extracurrics completely, but list each individual office you shadowed at under dental experiences. don't list every day you went in, just each office and how many hours per office. If you shadowed different types of doctors and this isn't apparent in the names of the offices, you could also put down what their specialties were.

For volunteering... same kind of thing... if it was through the same agency, program, or group the whole time i would just put it down once and then list the dates and a few words about what you did. If it was a few different programs, I would list the programs separately.

All of these short answer questions are going to be pretty variable in how people answer them, so no one format is right or wrong and it's not like they will disqualify your application if you don't do it a certain way. I think they will just appreciate it being as clear and concise as possible while still providing any details you feel are important.

ps. don't let people tell you not to ask questions just bc your gpa is good! part of the reason you have a good gpa is probably because you are always "worried" enough to ask questions and make sure you do everything right 🙂

Am I looking at the same application?? Mine says "Extracurricular, Volunteer, Community Service, Leadership Activities, Dentistry Job Shadowing" all under one heading. It then asks you to list your top 10 in the order most important to you. So, I don't really understand the confusion...??

your application this year must be totally different than ours last year then... disregard 🙂

Yeah, it is different - They just dumped it all together!

I wonder if they will read more into it than just the experiences themselves... for example, does it say something about the person if they list some volunteer and community service experiences as more important to them than some dentistry job shadowing ones, etc? interesting thought to ponder...

I was wondering the same thing. I"m still debating the order I should put them in. What sucks is you can only change the order around by deleting and resubmiting them.. 🙄
