No idea where this question came from or how I was supposed to know it, could someone please explain how they reacher their proper answer? I couldn't find it in the passage but maybe I missed it. Any help would be appreciated.

That question was pretty much something that you either know or you don't. The fact that an even number particles in the nucleus could statistically give a half half spin (half +1/2 and half -1/2) means that the nuclease would have no spin, but if you have an odd number of particles in the nucleus then you're guaranteed to have a non zero spin number!
