AAS President Message
Karen Jo Doyle, M.D., Ph.D.
I succeeded Jay Rubinstein as American Auditory Society President at the 2010 Spring Meeting. The AAS rotates a two-year Presidency among the four groups it represents: Otolaryngology, Industry, Audiology, and Hearing Science. Every two years the Board, which has representation from all four groups elects the AAS President for a two-year term. Jay and I are sharing the current President's term, and next year we will be succeeded by Tim Trine, Ph.D., who represents Industry.
The American Auditory Society has no political or professional agenda. Its focus is on multidisciplinary interactions among audiologists, otolaryngologists, hearing scientists, and industry representatives. We achieve this interaction through our journal,
Ear and Hearing, and our annual meeting.
Ear and Hearing, edited by Brenda Ryals, Ph.D., a past-president of the AAS, is published by Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins. Under Dr. Ryals leadership, the journal has continued to grow in submissions and pages, while maintaining an excellent impact factor compared with other journals in the realm of otolaryngology.
The annual American Auditory Society Meeting, held in Scottsdale, Arizona has grown from 100 participants ten years ago to more than 400 in 2010. The meeting highlight is the Carhart Memorial Lecture, honoring Raymond Carhart, the Father of Audiology. Thanks to our NIH ConferenceGrant we have been able to invite internationally-known Translational Lecturers and to sponsor travel for graduate students and residents to attend the meeting. Submitted papers on topics including but not limited to psychoacoustics, hearing aids, cochlear implants and auditory electrophysiology provide outstanding scientific sessions. A trainee poster session allows graduate students and residents to interact with experts. The casual venue, hotel-provided breakfasts, and daily luncheons included in registration fees all provide a collegial atmosphere and accessibility for meeting participants.
If you are not already a member, please consider joining the American Auditory Society. Annual dues are only $55/year. We hope to see you at our annual meeting to be held March 3-5, 2011 at the Chaparral Suites Resort in Scottsdale.
