Hi, Do you know why an abdominal binder would be used for a rehab patient? I was in the hospital and this was ordered for a pt who had a sudden drop in bp and hr. What does the abdominal binder do?
Thanks,

Abdominal binders are often used in patients with spinal cord injury. In an able-bodied person, the abdominal muscles and lower extremity musculature are thought to help maintain blood pressure by decreasing venous pooling. Also, when there is a reduced sympathetic outflow (from a high spinal cord injury), the body can not constrict peripheral blood vessels to increase blood pressure. So the thought is that an abdominal binder can help decrease venous pooling and increase abdominal pressure (thus keeping splanchnic blood pressure up).

Correct me if I'm mistaken.
