We all know that there are a gazillion organizations out there that throw "certificates" and "diplomas" your way if you become a member and pay the dues etc. But this particular board came to my attention when I saw that my GPR orientation schedule had a little time-slot alloted for it. Its the American Board of General Dentistry - ABGD. Doing a lil' reading, this board seems like a pretty intense organization. If you visit the website: www.abgd.org you'll see that the criteria to become EVEN ELIGIBLE to sit for their certification exam are crazy! 600 CDE hours with a minimum of 30 in each speciality; 2 years of AEGD/GPR or 1 year of AEGD/GPR + some other random accomplishment...and this list goes on. THEN, when you sit for the WRITTEN part, it's a 6 hour exam - basically a repeat of part II boards with a lot more of tx. planning/operative/fixed. After you WAIT AT LEAST one year, if you clear the written part, you have to take the ORAL part which HEAVILY emphasizes tx. planning, diagnosis and case presentations etc...u get the hint...
My question is...is this something worth looking into?...is it really considered the pinnacle of general dentistry (like they claim on their website...🙄) ?? Does it help if you have remote interests in pursuing dentistry in the academic setting...clinical instructor etc.
ANY input on the matter will be much appreciated.
