hey... i was reading this magazine today in class. (the kids I was teaching were taking a test) anyhow, I ran across an article that had Evo Devo in the title.... and I was like whoa. I had no clue that Evo Devo meant Evolution Developmental Biology.

Just curios if anyone has a name that means something like that?

Dr. Donkey was a mid-19th century English physician/veterinarian who attempted to vaccinate children with a cowpox-related disease that attacked donkeys (strangely enough it was referred to as something like equinipox even though it mainly affected donkeys and not horses). He ran a needle and thread threw the donkey pox lesions and then through the skin of some hundred children in southwestern Wales (apparently the Welsh were expendable compared to the English). He didn't realize that equinipox couldn't immunize humans against other diseases and had no pathological effect in man, but as a result of his misguided work he picked up the moniker Dr. Donkey.

Sparky man is a nickname for my little dog, Sparky.

The term "evo-devo" was mentioned quite often in my Bio I/II book. 🙂
(It was the Neil Campbell, 6th edition.)

And, uhm, no. My name means very little. 😳

Good thread.

I'm a big jazz listener and Thelonious Monk came to mind. I melded my name Nick to make Nicholonious.

Larsitron is the name of my photography/print design company and it's a nickname I got from being an AV/Computer geek.

thumbs up to the monk. I love his style.

Dopaminophile was Casanova's hero, the unsung greatest lover in history. Giacomo Casanova once said "Strong men will rise and fall, magnanamous names will ebb and flow, yet Dopaminophile's unsung presence will drive the passions of women for all eternity."

...

That... or... I was reading about dopamine receptors when I made up the name.

My 1956 3/4 ton 4x4 International Harvester Travelall is called the Safari Wagon.

"Monopolova" is a brand of vodka as well as the street on which I lived the first year of my life. 😎

humuhumu is the Hawaiian name for "triggerfish". I love watching triggerfishes in their natural habitat, i.e., warm oceans. Too bad I don't live closer to their natural habitat....

"Quimica" is just the Spanish word for "chemistry." "Q" is short for "quintessence." Several ancient cultures believed that the earth was comprised of four elements: earth, water, air, and fire. The heavens, in contrast, were thought to be made of something entirely different called ether, aka quintessence (literally, the fifth element). So my name means "the fifth element of chemistry." We moderns still use the word "quintessence" to mean "the best example" or "epitome" of something, so the name can also mean "the epitome of chemistry."

I just had to say that I LOVE your signature. It's really funny!

I was eating Dorito.

I like this thread. It's cool to find out the intentions behind the names we see so much.

Mine's pretty simple: I have a '65 Mustang, and my first name is Sally. 😎

wow, im boring, mines based off of my name :/

I don't want to spread falsities. Wanted someone else to call me out on this.

I'm just behave like a Donkey...but that exlpaination seems a little unsatifactory.

Hmm, I'm usually up too late.

I'm writing my dissertation. I have a 2 year old. 'Nuff said.

patzan is a slang Russian word that means "young guy", "dude", etc. The proper transcription would be "patsan" but nobody pronounces it right when I write it like that. "pah-tsawn". My name is not Pat and I am not a woman (contrary to many's beliefs on SDN).

Why not QdeQuimica?

My name is fairly obvious

Mine's a toughie. I'm just glad that I don't have to change it, at least for 4 more years.

Hermit = loner/recluse/troglodyte/anchorite/misanthrope/loser.

I picked the name because basically I was bored most of the time and ended up doing a lot of stuff by myself for a long time. Thus, the name Hermit MMood (surname without one letter)

I made my name up, it doesn't mean anything.

But it is the name of a historical (and present?) Kuwaiti port, a present-day Kuwaiti engineering company, an out of business (?) Dutch bank (I thought, can't find it anymore), and is a Japanese given name.

So I once thought I made it up but I suppose not.

I got my handle from the book My Name is Asher Lev by Chiam Potok. The phrase 'sitra achra' is yiddish, used by Hasidic Jews to mean "the evil/other side."

I thought it was a sinister phrase and simply loved it - and since I'm not Jewish then technically to the more devout Hasids - I am the Sitra Achra!!!

I came up with this name back in middle school. I guess I am always looking towards the future. 😀

There's code blue (heart attack), code pink (stolen baby), and the infamous code brown (look below for explanation) which you will all become familiar with in the ER 👎

:barf: <---- but out the other end 😉

Cool thread.

"91 Bravo" or "91B" is the Army military occupational specialty (MOS) code for a medical specliast (combat medic). I served as a flight medic in the Army Reserve for a number of years.

A couple of years ago the MOS was sadly changed to "91 Whiskey" or "91W" along with the name: health care specialist. So sad.

UCLA student, you're cool and all, but I really think that the hills are dead, or at least inanimate.

My name comes from the fact that facing reality and consciousness equals pain. It is always better to be in an altered state where reality is softened a bit (i.e. drunk or asleep). Also, I really like the Madonna song "Bedtime Story" in which she implores listeners to "Get unconcscious."

I changed it just for you. I hope it's not too obscure.

I always thought the hills are alive....

OH...that's where that comes from! I had forgotten about that movie. UCLA, is your new one from Napoleon Dynamite?

Yeah, that's what mine is to. I have so many random nicknames that are variations of my name that I have no idea where that one came from. It's just the one that I like the best 🙂

Belfagor was the man who fooled the devil in one of Machiavelli's short stories. It was called "The Devil Who Took a Wife".

Right, my avatar used to be a picture from The Sound of Music. The text above made more sense before I changed my avatar. And yes, my new phrase is from Napoleon Dynamite.

Thanks, virilep! 😳

Aren't you kind of over with the whole "I'm in at UCLA" thing? Isn't it time for a new avatar? I mean it's implied that you are at UCLA Medicine now, even if you didn't realize that when you registered the nick.

I thought it had something to do with the 80s band 😕

I agree. I just tried to change my avatar, but it won't let me load anything. I can't even revert back to the old one. 🙁

Circle The Drain. Usually refers to a patient who is not doing well, and is steadily deteriorating. ie. "Our patient in the ICU is CTD...

Mercapto comes from Latin mercurium captans - siezing mercury - and denotes sulfur.

Vizadeh (or zadeh) is a Persian name ending.

So, I guess I am Mr. Brimstone, which accords with my general reputation on SDN (of a firebrand, lunatic, etc.)

Treg is short for regulatory T-cells. They keep your immune response in check. So I guess you can call me the Regulator (makes me think of that Warren G song from the good old days...high school for me 😉)

Treg

Overeducated refers to the fact that I've been in school like... forever (did one four year degree in film, then out of school a year, then did one year towards a degree in computer science before spending 3 years doing premed/biology degree). Good news is I'm almost done with undergrad classes forever.

I use mine cause a friend called my friend that after he said something about him and I have never heard anyone call someone that. It doesn't even make sense to me but it was so different that I had to have it.
