Anyone know whats a reasonable score to expect in chief yr to avoid the risk of flunking the QE??

Best year for me was intern year (obviously)... mid 80 percentile... since then has trended downwards... this year, chief yr... did pretty bad... low 50s percentile.

You guys think i need to worry? Im just a crappy test taker (yes... I know everyone who does poor says this).

If you score below 35th percentile, the literature says you have an increased risk of failing the ABS Qualifying Exam. Here's a link to a nice study on the topic, and here's a link to a similar article that preceded it slightly.

Still, I don't think you should be too ashamed of scoring above the 50th percentile. You're being measured against a very intelligent and capable national cohort. Statistically, 50% of surgical residents should be offended by your comment....

This is also Student Doctor where everyone had 4.0's, 39 on MCAT, 240+ on Step 1, AOA, and only at top 25 schools. Very few normal people here 😉

to add to what was said above:
~75% of people will pass their written boards on the first try. These are pretty much the same people who took the absite (minus a few who might have delayed a year or so to study more), so the 35% number should be a reasonable cushion of being likely to pass. If the number was 50%ile, then the pass rate would be much much lower.

(having said that, don't forget to study for the boards, they are too expensive and painful to want to voluntarily do them twice)
