Does anyone know where I can find an image or chart that says what is absorbed where in the GIT? I did an image search, but didn't come up with squat. I'd like one to tack up on my wall since I always forget the location of mineral/vit/etc uptake.
First Aid has a tiny diagram in the GI section.
To sum it up:
Stomach - EtOH
Duodenem - Glucose, Vit A/D, Fatty Acids, Fe++, Ca++
Prox Jejunum - Glucose, galactose, mono/disaccharides, Vit A/D, Fatty Acids, proteins, Amino Acids
Term Jejunum - water soluble vitamins, disacch, FA's, proteins, AA's
Ileum - Proteins, AA's, Vit B12, Bile salts, folic acid
Colon - H2o, K+, NaCl, short chain FA's
A common board question will ask about the relationship between Crohn's disease (which usually strikes the terminal ileum) and its effect on fat absorption (specifically, the loss of bile salts leading to inability to absorb lipid-soluble vitamins A,D,E,K... then a whole host of other symptoms from there).
Electrolyte questions usually focus on the renal nephron.
