Academic Dentistry

Anyone thinking about going into academic dentistry? This is something that I would really like to do, but I wanted poll the experts out here for a bit more information.

I have heard that you can do full-time faculty or part-time with a private practice on the side. Any ideas on this one?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hey that's what I'm planning on doing. If you're looking at a full-time career in academia, you'll need to do graduate work (almost certainly) to get a masters of PhD. If you want to do research, then the PhD is a must and a post-doc should follow. I plan on practicing part time (either in a private group practice, or in the faculty practice) while also teaching and doing research. I've looked into this quite a bit so if you have more questions feel free to ask.

i have also considered doing this since more than 30% of the dental school faculties are expected to retire in the next 10 years.. and even this year there are over 300 dental school faculty positions are yet to be filled!!! (i was told this at my interview)
so whether you want it or not, the weight will be on our shoulders very soon.

i would like to be an adjunct faculty for a while, when i have practiced for a while and my practice is running smoothly on its own... as blue tooth said, we'll probably need some sort of specialty degree to be able to get into academia...
