I need your guys' advice on a situation that I am having trouble with right now. During the winter of my freshman year, I was accused of academic dishonesty because I was in a group project in which one of the members heavily plagiarized the information on our project. As such, all of the group members were accused of academic misconduct although the only person who was convicted of academic misconduct was the group member responsible for plagiarizing. I am currently applying for dental school and was wondering what I should do about reporting it. When I called the committee on academic dishonesty, I was told that I should not disclose information about the trial because while I was on trial, I was found not in violation. However, I want to be honest and upfront with dental schools about my academic history. All records pertaining to me have been eradicated since I was not found in violation but regardless of whether there is a record or not, I want to come clean about the situation. Do you think that this will hurt my chances at dental school?

Uh? LOL, you serious?

If theres nothing on your record, why on earth would you say there is? Especially with academic dishonesty?

If theres something there, check yes. If theres something not there, check no.

Case closed.

Listen to your academic advisor...🙂

Why would you possibly want to report this? Some idiot in your group cheated and he got in trouble.... Not related to you at all...

If someone in one of your classes cheated on a test would you turn yourself in for it?

I'd like to rob a store with you in it, I would just be like "HE DID IT!" and you would take the blame and turn yourself in.

There is no honor in admitting to something you didn't do and were found innocent of. There is nothing to come clean about and bringing up a negative situation when it isn't pertinent to you will only reflect poorly on you.

The result will be negative because it shows you have poor judgment.

Nuff has been said right there.
You can do the right thing, or you can do the thing that will get you into dental school.
Actually, if your planning on applying in 2013, make sure you say you have academic dishonesty on your record. One less competitor for me to go against 🙂

I think the "right thing" is to say nothing at all, since the OP didn't do anything wrong.

Anyway OP come on, you're smart enough, why would you even think to bring this up when it wasn't you who cheated? I don't get it.....

omg. please dont. you didnt cheat anyways.

Does OJ still admit to his allegations from decades ago?

why would you volunteer anything that might taint their impression of you when you had no control over it and were completely innocent.

I highlighted 2 main points.

1) you weren't guilty, what is there to report?
2) if you REALLY feel the need to tell dental schools, do yourself a favor and don't report it on AADSAS, even tho you weren't found guilty, thats not something you want on your AADSAS. HOWEVER, in your interviews, sometimes they ask you questions like "have you ever cheated" or "describe a difficult scenario you've faced, and how u dealt with it".... You can always bring up this incident in an interview.

I called the Committee on Academic Dishonesty today and they told me that while all the records are eradicated, there is a permanent list of names held for "internal affairs" purposes. I hear that some dental schools require the school to send a form signed by me that releases confidentiality of all academic records. What should I do now?

Your on a list of "internal affairs"
Can they find out what the internal affair was?
What you should do:
Call a dental school with a fake name. Tell them your situation, and ask if you should report it when applying and if so will it hurt your chances.

the question on aadsas is

"Have you ever been dismissed, expelled, found to have violated an honor code, disqualified, suspended, put on probation, or otherwise been subject to disciplinary action at any college/university in connection to misconduct? "

your answer to this would be no. there is no where else on the application where you would mention it either. if you want to put yes to this question or contact the school directly to talk about your non-cheating incident you weren't guilty of, knock yourself out.
