After one has interviewed at a program, how much is the academic record used to determine where a program will rank its applicants? I've had some great interviews at really stellar programs, but my grades and board scores are not as high as average applicants. Will this influence where I get ranked? We've all heard that it's a level playing field once you get an interview - how true is this statement?

This is not going to keep me from ranking where I want to go, I'm just curious to know how "level" of a playing field it really is...

From the one year in which I participated in the making of my program's rank list, the playing field is pretty much leveled once you get an interview. In our meeting on making the rank list, board scores and grades rarely if ever was a topic. Other accomplishments or experiences often did come up however.

Match is voodoo. Sacrifice a chicken and say a chant. 😉

I haven't sat in on ranking but I know that what our PD looks for is 'do you think they would fit in here?' 'Could you work with them?'

It seems that once an interview is granted, it is really more of a gestalt thing, with little emphasis placed on class rank/board scores.

Just my impression.
