I heard that Larry Weiss resigned from city of hope effective today to take a job at clarinet. A hemepath mill in orange county

He is a pretty famous expert What could possibly be the allure? Can they possibly paying him more than city of hope?

Do they just pay these people for their name or will Larry weiss's name be on bone marrow biopsies sent in from community practice oncs?

What other uberacademics have gone to path mills?

petras went to ameripath.

Academics pays next to nothing even if you are famous.

Bernie Ackerman pulled the ultimate path mill stunt and started his own, with fellows to boot--who paid HIM for the privilege of sitting at his thirty-headed microscope. Santa Cruz did something similar, also for dermpath.

I don't know the history of Bostwick labs but he must have been well known before starting it, no?

To be fair to the Ackerman Academy, the "fellows" that are paying to be there are not in accredited dermpath fellowships. They are often foreign MD's looking to gain experience in dermpath to further their foreign careers. The only accredited dermpath fellowship spots there are traditional spots held by American residency grads who are paid a traditional stipend. And speaking of Ackerman, sounds like Dirk Elston is going to be the new director there. Money talks.

So are you saying the ucsf dermpaths would be getting 5 million instead of 2 million a year if they were in private practice.

When I rotated with them I got to say it was very assembly line like and maybe they could sign out 15000k each a year. I of course don't know their arrangement but if they were billing global with a mix of Medicare and insurance. The max they could hope to collect each would be 2.25 million. I'd say their salary is fair.

Those people are the marked exception. Just because you can name 2 people in academics that make 2 million doesn't mean anything. I can name you 2 school teachers who make 2 million. Exceptions exist everywhere.

I don't personally know Dr. Weiss, but City of Hope imploded recently where the hospital sued the doctors and all the doctors counter sued. I remember it made news sometime last year. Dr. Weiss was on one of the boards so I'm sure he had a big headache on his hands. That would probably be enough for anyone to move on to greener pastures.

I heard something about that too but know none of the details.

That had to be a factor. I wonder what the lawsuit was about but assume it had to be about money.

City of Hope did indeed meltdown. Sad Panda.

But I expect most academic path programs to begin buckling soon and losing people.
