Accelerated Seven Year BS/DO programs

An excellent program. You should feel fortunate that you have been accepted into such a sought after program. I would surmise that you are in the 5% of students who have the acaedmice ability to gain admission into such a program and thus lessenign your educational expecnse by one year. NYCOM is in my opinion a top medical school and is on par with the other fine institutions of New York (i,e Columbia P & S, NYU, Cornell) to name a few. Bravo to you.

Thanks. It is competative. I have a high average and SAT scores, extracurriculars etc. I am very happy to know in advance that I am accepted and not have to woory about the whole application process. I got into both the NYCOM programs through SUNY Geneseo and SUNY New Paltz. Does anyone know any students that went through either of these schools?
I go to suny geneseo and have heard that many people end up dropping out for reasons that are unknown to me.
Definately go with the NYIT BS/DO program if you know osteopathy is for you. I myself was involved with a 6 year doctorate pharmacy program but decided I wanted the full undergrad experience and more freedom. Just lay it all out and compare both routes as objectively as you can. GL with your decision

I just got accepted to the NYIT 7 year BS/DO program and was having several doubts, iknow its in the old westbury campus but heard that the undergrad school is not so good. The college is still waiting for my reply. But I have other options as well, I could go for premed and then become a MD instead of a DO. But its not going to be a 7 year program for MD. And since its a 7 year program do i have to take my MCAT and will my grade on it affect me at all?

Thats, the advantage to the bs/do program. Although you still have to take the mcats, the only require you get a minimal score to get automatic acceptance.
Yeh. It is a difficult choice. Do you take the chance and go traditional pre-med and hope you do well and have choices in medical school OR do you take the sure thing and stick with NYCOM? I know SUNY Geneseo is an excellent school and I certainly would be happy there. I would be interested to hear from the students that went through it (apllying to med school etc.) . Which would you select and why?
There are many things that you must consider that you may not have thought about. I went through the BS/DO program at NYCOM and I am glad that I did it. Osteopathy is definitely the right choice for me and I couldn't ever see myself being happy as an MD. However, the things that you must consider have to do with lifestyle and the college experience. You will not get the typical college experience at NYCOM because most people commute so you don't get the dorm life. You will also have most of your classes with the same people, so it's difficult to meet new people. It is, however, in the NYC area(an hour away) so that is a plus for many poeple. Another big plus is not having to worry about applying to a bunch of schools. As long as you maintain your GPA and get a 24 on the MCATs, you are guaranteed a spot. A spot that I'm sure lots of people would kill to have because they know the stress of applying.
As with all advice you get, take it with a grain of salt because ultimately it is your decision.

I am going to SUNY geneseo right now (freshman). I'm starting the traditional premed route next year. I'm confident that I woudl've turned down the 7 year bs/do program for the same year I dropped out of the 6 year pharm d. program that I was on last semester. Just think things out totally and completely before you choose. Admission to NYCOM is not totally guarenteed unless you hit a cum gpa of 3.4 and a min 24 on the mcats. The school itself is not so great for undergrad, but its not terrible. If you decide to go traditional premed, I'm pretty confident you will have a much fuller undergrad experieence. This way you will be in an UG school for the reason that you like it not because of a program. Secondly you can major in anything you want while still pursuing medicine. Another thing is if you can maintain a 3.4 and a 24 on the mcats, you are most likely going to receive admission to some of the osteopathic schools anyways. Just give it some great thought whichever route you decide to take.
Chances are, if you were able to get into the 7 year program, you are at little risk of doing it the trad way and NOT getting in somewhere.
In my humble opinion, accelerated programs aren't the way to go. I just dont think that cutting one year off of your education is worth the potential loss of life experience.

I personally wouldnt recommend this program or any other BS/graduate degree program. There are definitely some advantages to these programs, i.e., knocking a year off of your grad school career. However, speaking from personal experience, not many people are really sure that what they want to do when they go to college will be what they want to do when they graduate. The whole point of an undergraduate education is to help shape your future. You may decide that you want to go after a completely different grad degree after you get involved in some cool stuff as an undergrad. Plus, your undergrad education is also the most fun you get to have in higher ed, why lose a year? If you can get into med school now, I'm sure you wont have any problem later if you decide thats what you want to do. Good luck with your decision making process.

Nice, i'm jealous. I went to the previous 2 moe.downs, but couldnt afford to go to it this year cause I flew out to cali for phish fest 8. I downloaded the shows from moe.down this year, rob was on fire. So are you applying to MSU-COM or what?
