Maybe some of you guys who are already in the game can help out a little. I was told by one of the secretaries at U. Michigan that there is sort of a "gentalmans agreement" not to send of Acceptance Letters" before December 1st. Do people get accepted before this? And I was just wondering, how many people pay the non-refundable deposits and then decide on other schools afterwards?

Yes, the agreement of the dental schools and ADA says that no school shall inform any applicant in writing about an acceptance or rejection prior to December 1. Most schools abide by this agreement. However, keep your eyes and ears open during the interviews and you might be pleasantly suprised. At two of my interviews I was told almost directly of my acceptance. I mean they didn't say, "You are accepted." However, they said things like, "Well, we hope to see you soon (wink, wink)." or "We are sure you will have plenty of schools to choose from, we just hope you pick us."

I got NOVA's acceptance letter November 30th. So I guess I beat the odds there. :hardy:.

As for deposits, understand the rules first. If you get an acceptance between Dec 1 - Dec 30 you have 45 days to pay your deposit. If you get an acceptance between Jan 1 - Jan 30 you have 30 days to pay your deposit. Feb 1 - Feb 30 you have 15 days and any time after this you have 10 days or immediately.

You might find yourself, strategizing. So this may mean forking over between 500-1000 bucks to save your place, only to be "enlightened" and "upset." when your top school comes around the week after. It is part of the game, you win some you lose some.

Excellent post, Desi. I can see you're on top of things, as usual.

Also, when thinking of the dental school "game", remember that it is two-sided. Hopeful students are playing it, and adcoms are also playing it. Those adcoms are trying to get the best students they can to attend their school, and are vying with other schools to grab and hold those best students.

Many schools try to abide by the Dec 1 agreement but as my soon-to-be-classmate (Desi) told you at some interviews they will drop hints.......BIG hints.

At everyone of my interviews there was a hint or two dropped. You just have to listen and then weed out what they are saying. At one interview my interviewer said "Well my advice is you live in the Grad housing next year". At another interview as I was leaving I was asked "So will I be seeing you at my place next Thanksgiving?", and at another "I like what I see here, I wont send you home unhappy". You see they let you know, because they know you are applying to several schools and just like you need them, THEY NEED YOU.

Yes, private schools are a little more liberal in dropping hints, but state schools do too........"the sooner you move here, the faster we can help you establish state residency for you".

Apply early, take notes when you interview, spend a couple days looking around and make an informed decision. What was myfirst choice rapidly changed after a few interviews.........now Im going to my first choice. ...........
