I have been accepted at a medical school whose orientation begins the second week in July. I am on a waitlist at another school, and after speaking with the dean, I should hear something towards the end of July. According to AMCAS rules, once a student either enrolls or begins orientation he must withdraw from any other schools from which he is under consideration. I want to attend the school I am waitlisted at, but in accordance with AMCAS, would not be able to attend since I would have attended orientation at another school. Are these rules set in stone? If anyone has any information, I would really appreciate it.

i'd contact your waitlisted medschool again and explain your situation...maybe they could get you a definite answer sooner....

I would forget about the school that waitlisted you. Make you plans to go the the school which already accepted you. There is no reason to keep life on hold for this school.

There's no way around this rule, I asked around extensively. But you can beg your waitlist school to give you an acceptance beforehand, or a rejection...

Wait a minute... how come I heard about these people who "switched" schools after a month into classes?

You shouldn't be able to do that since that leaves the med school you left with an empty seat. If a student were to try, they'd be taking a huge risk. If the school they left found out and contacted the school they were planning on attending, they'd be S.O.L.

You should go to the school that you got in to. Once you go to the orientation, you can't go to any other schools.

I agree. I know someone who was in the same situation, and they contacted the dean of their waitlisted school to explain their special situation. And they got off the waitlist sooner than later since the school was going to take them off the list anyway. If you haven't already, you should tell them they are your first choice and that if accepted you would be there in a heartbeat. Good luck! 🙂
