I have some questions about getting multiple acceptances!

1. can i accept all offers before I make my final decision? And does that mean I will get back my deposit when I drop the other schools?

2. I have had a school offer me a scholarship and I need to accept or decline in two weeks, but is the scholarship binding? Does it mean that I must attend the school if I accept it?

Thanks 🙂

1. You can accept all offers until I think the end of April, at which point you have to pick one and drop all others (though you also may keep your waitlists at that point). As for deposits, each school does it differently. However if they charge a deposit right away, best guess is it's not refundable. If you do end up attending that school, it typically will be put towards your tuition though.

2. No idea. Read all the fine print in the paper/email offer. If in doubt, call the school and ask.

you do not get your deposit back - tat money is as good as gone usually

Yes, I believe most MD schools have a $100 refundable deposit to hold your spot.
Per my understanding, DO schools, however, typically have a much larger, NON-refundable deposits. You are forced to choose at that point.

The best practice is to read the fine print. Each school might and can do things differently; maybe they are trying out something new this year.
No . . . if you look on MSAR, almost every school I've looked at has a refundable deposit up to a certain date.

Okay, yeah. I heard DO schools are like that. I guess I always just assume people are talking about MD schools on the allo board, but that's definitely not always the case.

I fail to understand the reason for the major discrepancy between MD and DO deposits, but thanks for the info nonetheless

Not sure, my guess is that MD schools can see your acceptances at a certain date so there is no information asymmetry, feelings aren't hurt. They can manage waitlist accordingly.
However, there are more people applying to DO for backup, so you have to show your commitment and put down the $ if you want to hold a spot.

There must be some yield strategy involved with DO schools' high non-refundable deposits.

I only learned about their large deposit req'ts last year when a friend was applying to only DO schools because of a GPA issue. I think she had to pay $1k or $2k as a non-refundable deposit. I vaguely remember that she felt she had to deposit by a rather early deadline (like maybe a few weeks after she was accepted), and once she did that, she pretty much stopped pursuing other DO schools because she didn't feel that she could afford to waste her deposit money.

I suspect that DO schools feel vulnerable when applicants have applied to both MD and DO schools. They probably believe that in many instances, if an applicant gets accepted to both, the MD school will be ultimately chosen. So, by demanding a large unrefundable deposit, they're more likely going to know which acceptances are going to "stick".

That's just my guess.

If applicants apply to only DO schools, do large, non-refundable deposits still apply?

When I applied, Meharry had a non-refundable $300 fee to hold a spot.

just looked it up on MSAR, Meharry still has a $300 deposit, $200 refundable prior to April 15.
also looked up a few other schools out of curiosity, most schools don't have a deposit 😕

Which school is it? I also had to accept or decline my scholarship in 2 weeks so I'm guessing it's the same school, but if so the paperwork explicitly states that accepting at this time is not binding.

Yes, I believe so.

I'm not sure that DO schools would really know if you only applied to DO schools. I didn't apply to DO schools, so I'm not sure, but I don't think they have access to whether you applied thru AMCAS or TMDSAS as well.
