HI! I just wanted some feedback on KCOM....I was wondering if anyone could tell me what their interview was like and if they are/aren't going, why?? Thanks!

Congrats on your interview! The interview process was LONG cause it was all morning. A relaxed interview, but too long. I turned down my acceptance to KCOM b/c of Kirksville. I didn't like the location. Although the school IS impressive, I just didn't feel that I fit in there.

Good luck!

milleniumhc,

I had interviews at UHS and KCOM, on back to back days. KCOM is a great school with the longest tradition in excellence of any Osteopathic school (obviously). Aside from that, the people there are the friendliest and that includes students. I am sure they have their fair share of gunners that go there, but overall they are very friendly. I like the technology that they put at your fingertips to help you study and that they have you starting on physicals your first year.

The interview is VERY laidback. I even felt comfortable in asking one of the interviewers if he was going to recommend me for acceptance. Which my wife almost beat me for when I told her. Kirksville is a VERY small town (17,000 people) with not a whole lot to do if you are used to having 'big city' amenities at your fingertips. I would wager that the cost of living there is low because of this.

I chose this school partly because of the environment, but mostly because I like how they teach how to practice medicine. I also really liked the fact that they had a hospital right there, so it will be very easy to shadow someone.

I chose AZCOM over UHS and KCOM. I didn't have a great feeling at UHS. I loved KCOM and I even liked Kirksville, but I didn't like the facilities. If I am going to pay that much money to go to med school, I want a modern anatomy lab and a bigger better library. Of course, I am spoiled by the enormous med library at the University of Arizona and AZCOM has everything brand new. I also thought the people I interviewed with at AZCOM were nicer and more friendly. My interview at KCOM was very laid back, but I was exhausted afterward. It is simply too long a day. Plus I wore heels and my feet were dying after walking this way and that way and everywhere in between. Wear tennis shoes. It may look weird, but your feet will thank you for it.

I turned down an acceptance at KCOM because of the town. I can't realistically see myself living there and making the drive in and out whenever I want to leave, especially in the winter.
The program seemed really top notch, though, and having a small hospital on site did appear to be a great plus. The library was really small, though. Plus, I didn't like the fact that the labs were so far away, again, especially in the winter.
However, if you're from a small town, or enjoy the small (SMALL!) town atmosphere, I think you'll like it there. I'm sure the education you'll end up with will be one of the best. 🙂

Thanks so much for your honest responses so far...I really appreciate it!

mellinumhc,

I chose to go to KCOM, for many of the same reasons as Dctrbn. I enjoy smaller towns, though it took me a while to realize that, but, more important, the smaller town has allowed me to get more involved with my classmates. Yes, as the recent interviewers mentioned, the library here is small, however, you will seldom need to use the library, except to study in, because you don't have a lot of research that needs to be performed. That said, KCOM, is getting ready to build a new Information and Technology Center that ought to be done before the class of 2006 is off campus. Yes you have to walk up to the anatomy lab (2 blocks), however, it is nice to get outside a little (you study a lot).

Mostly the reason I decided to attend KCOM was their great reputation, the friendliness of the campus, and the quiet confidence the students displayed during our lunch and tour with them during the interview process. If you have any specific questions about KCOM, I'll be happy to answer them.

Sincerely,

Sweaty Paul

I didn't choose KCOM for some of the same reasons others listed. I really enjoyed my visit there and their presentation is great. I can handle a small town, but don't know how my wife would react to a small town with me studying all the time. Anyone who chooses KCOM is getting a great education, that they made very apparent. You just have to find the school that fits your style...mine was AZCOM.

Hi Sweaty Paul, I was wondering what KCOM's Anatomy was like? I know that some other schools have cadavors that are already dissected. How many people do you share a cadavor with? I have heard horrible stories about anatomy partners. Did you have any bad experiences? Are there any people at KCOM from Michigan?? I know a few people from here that applied there, but that is just about it. Thanks for your input, i appreciate it. milleniumhc

milleniumhc,

Yes there are quite a few Michiganer's here, and more important, if you want to return to Mich, we have a lot of 3rd and 4th year rotation sites in Michigan.

As to anatomy. You will do the dissection as a lab group. KCOM does not have any prosected cadavers and your group will be responsible for the dissection process. Each group is composed of 4 people. Most groups get along really well since so much of your understanding of anatomy comes from seeing all of the relationships. Subsequently it makes it easier if you can work together rather harmoniously as a group. I think that the dissection process, though arduous and time-consuming, was well worth the effort and its structure at KCOM is second to none. In addition, having only 4 people in our group was good too, since everyone could participate in the dissection process and there were fewer personalities to accomodate. I haven't heard of anyone having a real "bad time", however, everyone has good and bad days and sometimes you had to be in lab when you didn't want to be. My group made a point to get together as a socially once or twice a quarter to forget school and anatomy, thus, we really got along well.

If you have any other questions let me know.

Sweaty
