Hey guys,

I've been fortunate enough to be accepted to medical school for Fall 2019 and now have a year of free time on my hands. I have a strong interest in research (bench or clinical) and hope to join a team at a nearby university (large state institution with its own medical school and teaching hospital).

I just have no idea where to start. I've emailed some physicians who are actively publishing but as expected they haven't responded. What else can I do besides emailing physicians/researchers? Should I contact some of the medical school faculty or maybe ask a few medical students I know? Any guidance would be much appreciated!

If you are in the area, definitely try and connect with a faculty member at your med school. Build those connections early, and then you can continue working when your classes start.
I would try this because it will help with continuing research throughout med school and the chance of getting multiple projects done and your name on publications.

The other thing is now that you are accepted, you have barely a year of time left and it may be difficult to find a position by blindly emailing people since researchers are often looking for someone who does not have a limited time to commit to research. Turnover in terms of lab research is annoying to PIs.

Honestly, I would just recommend enjoying your year off and maybe working to save up some money.

Haha yeh that's the other option I have. Hopefully I get lucky with a position, but whatever happens it seems this coming year will be enjoyable. =]
