Hello all,

I’m just trying to see what people are doing to prepare for the transition. I’ll be moving across the country and have a lot of affairs to get in order before I go. What are some of the things that you guys are doing?

Also recommendations from current students are appreciated. Anything you wish you had done prior to starting your program?

Congrats on the acceptance! I am still waiting to hear back from my first interview and have at least one more next month as of right now. Where will you be moving to?

Honestly....don't do anything extra, if you mean getting ready for the actual classroom. It is not worth trying to study or "get ahead" because it is impossible.

I didn't have to move for my program but from what I watch others do - besides obviously finding a place to live - they ask about gyms (campus, what's good/local/cheap), grocery stores (esp people who don't have cars (so also public transport)), dress code, scrub requirements...whatever eases the transition so when you're there, you can focus on school and you won't be scrambling for the logistics of life.

Things I wish I knew - I would NOT buy textbooks until you've started the semester and know what ones you'll need. In my program our teachers give us all the lecture notes we need, and we are contracted with FA Davis so we get many free online textbooks. My first semester I spent like $500 on books because they were listed as "required" and I thought it would be like my master's degree where we were buried alive in textbooks. Now I wait until 2-3 weeks into the semester to see if I think I'll find the textbook useful and I seldom end up buying them.

I also bought a ton of spiral notebooks because that's always how I have taken notes. They're still sitting on the shelf because my study habits drastically changed in DPT. I now take notes directly on the slides and when I am studying, I rewrite them into large unlined drawing pads.

If you can, maybe ask current students about textbooks and how they take notes, are they provided with slides etc, so you have a better idea of what supplies you may want to get.
Otherwise - CONGRATS and just enjoy your free time while you still can and just relax!

Thanks! Good luck! I hope you get that acceptance you’re looking for. I’ll be moving to Austin, TX from the Midwest!

Thanks for your advice and everything! I definitely hope to pick up on my learning style quickly and I know not to buy books prior to classes starting! Big mistake that I learned during my grad degree. Thanks again!
