I was recently accepted to LECOM. I am working on the matriculation agreement at the moment and I found a line in the technical standards that bothered me.

"Emotional instability precludes the successful completion of the medical curriculum. Any of the above behaviors are inconsistent with the standards of LECOM and will result in denial of admission or expulsions from the College"

I am bothered by this because I take Wellbutrin and Buspar for depression. I function very well with or WITHOUT medication. Yet I am wondering if I should disclose this information to LECOM, as they may DENY admission according to this if they perceive that as 'emotional instability'. This comes off to me as discriminatory on the part of LECOM... although maybe I am reading too much into it.

What should I do in this situation?

I would highly doubt this would warrant un-accepting you. Besides, you are likely required to do a physical, so they will eventually find out. And these are physician prescribed. I would think that you would be fine. It isn't much different than having ADD in med school.

Yeah, I have to go in for a physical soon. I will probably end up mentioning it to him.

I didn't see that kind of line in any other part of the matriculation packet, which was odd to me. There's still stigma in psychiatry, even in the medical community unfortunately.

You'll be fine, we were told many medical students are depressed at one point in time. I'm sure your not "unstable", so I would'nt worry about it too much.

At the risk of being that guy, why even tell the doc doing your physical about this? Unless he/she places you right then and there on other meds that are contra-indicated (which would have to be something ridiculous like chemotherapy drugs or something), I wouldn't worry about it. In fact, you'll never see them again once you move, right? In the end, who cares? You function great with or without them. I don't think it's right they should discriminate against you because of this, and I think you feel the same way. Why chance it? Why even fight it?

Why do you take medication you don't need?

Also, it says emotional instability. You are taking medication which supposedly makes you NOT emotionally unstable, so since you are stable, they can't deny you. There's nothing to say you can't be stable through medication.

There was a student here at LECOM that had some serious depression issues that attempted suicide in the not so distant past and the school worked with her to make sure she got the help she needed, but she did have to repeat a year because of the time missed due to the situation. They are not going to kick you out or deny you because of your issue

LECOM won't kick you out because of it - they do a lot of douchey things, but seem to be pretty sympathetic toward those with psychiatric issues. On the other hand, if the someone in the monarchy takes against you for another reason, it would not be beneath them to use a psychiatric diagnosis against you as the official reason for booting you. As an above poster said, why give them the opportunity? Get your physical from someone who is not your regular PCP, and don't mention the antidepressants.

Care to include the "above behaviors"? It seems like they honestly don't quite care about your condition's specifics as long as you're properly treated and stable.

That's what I said. He omitted the most important part of the letter.

When I was at LECOM there was a student who did kill herself
The class president stepped down due to mental health issues
There was a girl in my study group with ADHD - she did well
There was a girl who hid her pregnancy and tried to get her sister to take the baby so her mom wouldn't find out.

etc, etc, etc.

Everyone has some type of issue. LECOM just wants you to be successful, realize if you have a problem, and obtain proper treatment so you don't fail the boards and get through effectively.

Okay, here is the full paragraph.

"The candidate must be free of psychopathic or sociopathic behaviors, which are contrary to professional and ethical standards. Emotional instability precludes the successful completion of the medical curriculum. Any of the above behaviors are inconsistent with the standards of LECOM and will result in denial of admission or expulsions from the college."

This thread has no point. OP has no reading comprehension.

1. You are obnoxious.
2. It is vaguely written, which is the reason I started this thread.

I would imagine it takes much more than that. If they kicked people out for depression they would kick out 95% of every first year class.

If you feel you are emotionally stable, keep the rest to yourself.
