I was wondering if anyone has been accepted to opt schools without ever shadowing an OD, specifically at ICO, NECO, SUNY and Penn? Cause if noboy has, then I may reconsider applying to those schools since I have never shadowed an OD.

I was accepted to PCO without shadowing any OD. In addition, they even awarded me scholarships. I dont think PCO cares about shadowing experience. I hope that helps.

I'm not trying to be mean, but I can't imagine that anyone would consider going to 4 years of profession school without shadowing. How could you possible know if this is what you want to do? Even if you can get in without shadowing, you still NEED to go to an office and observe several times.

Well, I did the shadowing after I got accepted. I love it though.

Yes, I know of 2 people that entered and got scholerships, etc, etc, without shadowing. They were both Med school regects though and both currently miserable.

An optometrist that I shadowed a few weeks ago was a PCO alumnus and was accepted into PCO without any shadowing experience. In addition, she said she had no exposure to the field other than going to an optometrist to get her eye examined. However, out of all the optometrist that I have observed so far, all of them loved their jobs except for her. When asked if she like her profession, she responded to me with an “its decent” response. I agree with rpames that you should get at least some exposure to the field before you purse it. Bare in mind the four additional years of school, heavy course load and financial burden it would create as well. Most importantly, you would be responsible for a person’s vision and eyecare, one of the most important aspects of a person’s life.

so for those that didn't shadow beforehand, how did you manage to get a LOR from an optometrist?

yep, financial burden....mua ahahaha

I guess shadowing helps you see what the field is like a little, but how much can you really tell from a day or two?

I work at a pharmacy because I'm considering that as a backup choice, and I really don't think I could have made a good judgement about just that type of pharmacy job without working for at least a couple months.

Shadowing would at least give you some idea of what you would be doing. I agree that for anything it might take a while before you get a real feel of what the job actually entails but wouldn't having some idea be better than none at all? I personally don't think you can tell anything by just going for your eye appointments. It's a lot different on the other side of the phoroter. 🙂

No LOR from an OD is needed for PCO

While wehere talking about LOR... I dont have a pre-opt advisor and most schools want from either an advisor or a prof. Does anyone know if getting a LOR from a TA is good enough or does it have to be prof? I dont know any of my profs that personally, I do new a few of my TA's fairly well though.

it will be better if u get a LOR from ur professors. If u wanna know for sure, call the school and ask them about it.
