I know med schools need copies of matriculants' transcripts from domestic schools but does anyone know whether med schools need a copy of our transcripts from foreign schools where we've studied abroad? My UG transferred the credits and included full grade information but I do not know if that's sufficient. Thanks.

I would think that would suffice, but it might be a good idea to just call your school and ask.

From the AAMC:

When is a transcript NOT required?

AMCAS does not require official transcripts in the following cases:

  • Foreign college outside of the U.S., U.S. Territories, and Canada (not including American colleges overseas).

How do I enter courses from a study abroad program?

If your foreign coursework fits AMCAS's definition of "study abroad," you will typically enter the course details, grades, and credits under the foreign institution, exactly as they appear on the official transcript from the domestic institution that sponsored your program. AMCAS does not accept foreign transcripts. Each situation is different, though, so we encourage you to watch the AMCAS tutorial called How to Enter Study Abroad Course Work and review the AMCAS Instruction Manual for full details.

Thanks for your response, but unfortunately, while I am well-aware of the AAMC's rules, they have no impact upon what a SCHOOL must legally have. Universities are required, by accreditation bodies, to have official transcripts from every institution their students have attended. My question is ultimately whether or not that includes foreign institutions and is further complicated by the fact that the school from which I graduated used those credits to award me my degree and has listed the courses, units, and grades awarded by the foreign institution on my domestic transcript. Ultimately, I hope they will take my US school's word for it on those courses, as getting foreign transcripts is a difficult, time-consuming, and expensive process.

They just need your final transcript that says you graduated (with date on transcript)

No. You're fine. I studied abroad and since the courses showed up on my UG transcript (like yours) I didn't need a foreign transcript.
