Accepting Acceptances...

The two things you stated are the same thing. You accept the acceptance, but don't have to make a final decision until much later in the year. Many schools require a small deposit to hold your acceptance, but they give it back if you decide by May 15th.
 
Hmm, then I guess what I'm asking is, procedurally, how do you make a final decision?
 
final decision = withdraw from all schools except for the school you want to go to. not sure what's confusing here. 😕

just so i can mentally prepare... what kind of deposit are we talking? $100? $500? is there any special consideration they give to FAP recipients?

The size of the deposit tends to be relatively small, for MD schools. (They're ridiculous and mostly nonrefundable for many DO schools) I think they are on the order of about 100 dollars per school for MD schools. I don't think they waive it for FAP students. Could be wrong. It shouldn't be a big deal as long as you're not holding acceptances to ten schools.

I'm not sure anymore what your question is, Koko. You just accept your acceptances and when you make a final decision, or even just decide one school isn't for you, you call or email the school(s) you don't want to go to and release your acceptance(s). If you have a deposit in with them, they'll refund it. End of story.
 
Just accept all the acceptance and hold them until May15th 😀
 
so is it typical to hold most of your places until you get the fianicial aid stuff done? when do people start to release their holds? Feb? march? later? Is there a limit on holds?

you can do w/e you want. If you get accepted to a school you know you want to attend you can then withdraw from all others. Some hold onto like 10 and wait for finaid. Its really all up to you. Personally I will just withdraw from all schools if i get accepted into one of my top 3 choices. Finaid can determine a lot but at the same time, its fairly obvious whcih schools have finaid to give and which ones dont. You can hold as many acceptances as you want but by may 15th you have to decide on one...i think its may 15th at least...my mind is blank someone confirm this for me lol...i know its the 15th of something...

If you have no idea where you want to go, very much do this. It isn't your duty to throw away acceptances because you might not want to go there, but aren't sure yet. However, if you 100% want to go to some place then definitely call the others and let them know to accept someone else.
 
Dam! just accept every single school if u get scholarships from every school or money isnt a problem. u can attend all the schools, just fly around and take their examinations every year ... and get an md from 10 different schools!!!

hypothetically, if you have an acceptance, but AFTER may 15 you get accepted off a waitlist for a different school, and decide you want to go to that school instead, is it too late to decline the one you were accepted to before may 15?
 
^ according to the stuff above, if u read,
doesnt it make sense to reject the previous accepted acceptance, lose the deposit, and go to the school of choice?thats what a deposit really is for rite-.-
 
If you get accepted to a school after May 15th, you can decline your acceptance the other school you're accepted to. There's no problem with this. I think you get a couple weeks of grace time to consider new acceptances before you have to go back down to one acceptance.
 
Be nice to people on the waitlists and withdraw from schools you wouldn't really go to over the others.
 
When do you fund out about financial offers- need or merit based?

If you get an offer in October from a rolling admit school, do you just drop the other interviews that would be in the same category- like the ones in a certain region to which it is expensive to travel? When do the schools tell you if they give any merit/need grants?

I was wondering this as well. If you were fortunate enough to be awarded merit-based aid, would that come with your initial acceptance packet, or is it something schools figure out later in the year? Thanks!

Merit-based can come at any time with or following an acceptance. I've even heard of people getting some shortly after starting school.

If you turn your FAFSA in early and before the school's notification deadline, you should hear about financial aid by May 1st at the latest, but probably around mid-April. Long story short, get your tax **** together and fill out FAFSA asap (becomes available Jan 1st).

luckily from what I've seen they aren't terribly high...mine is $100

There are several ways to find out:

1)The financial aid presentation during your interview tells you what grants/scholarship are available ,when you can access them and who is eligible.

2)Some schools will invite you to apply for scholarship when you get your acceptance package.

3)US News gives you a fair look at what percentage of students receive grants/scholarship at a particular school. Example:86% of students at UChicago get some kind of scholarship compare to 37% of students at NYU. So if you have an upcoming interview, you should research their financial generosity to see if it's worth your time going. Assuming of course, it's not your top choice.

It seems irresponsible to me to put off dropping all the other schools on the 15th. And I assume it needs to be done by mail? And who is it that actually is enforcing the 'one school after May 15th' principle?

Irresponsible? How? If I am fortunate enough to get multiple acceptances, I intend to hold on to them until all finaid has been settled, and in many cases, that is not until after May 15.

Med schools know where you hold acceptances by May 15, so you really can't be playing games after that date...

I thought they were able to see your other acceptances in March, but you had to only hold one acceptance after May 15th? I thougth I read that in one of these threads...

Note that I said they know of your other acceptances "by" May 15 - I am not sure of the actual date, hence the reason I did not put one - but for purposes of this discussion, it only becomes an issue after May 15.

Also - you can only hold one acceptance after May 15 - you don't have to hold any acceptances (you said "had to only hold one"). And you can stay on as many waitlists as you wish, but if you get an acceptance off a waitlist after May 15, you have a very limited period of time to accept, and to then 'un-accept' any other acceptance you are holding...

The real problem for people with multiple acceptances is that financial aid is not always finalized by May 15. It seems like these people get to buy some time and hold onto multiple acceptances while waiting for finaid results - one probably has to inform all of the schools where they are holding acceptances of this after May 15, but I am not sure about the specifics, but I do recall reading where people have held onto multiple acceptances after May 15 for this reason.

I misread your "by may 15" (And I didn't mean you had to hold an acceptance.)
