Hey guys, I was wondering if there is any negatives if I accept a few SMP programs, such as BU, RFU, and EVMS then later decline 2 of them.
(since there acceptance time is only couple weeks after you receive your admittance)

I heard the schools you decline will make you lose chances of attending their medical school later, is this true ? Can anyone give me more information on this ?

Thank you for your time

Sounds like you're going in the black book no matter what, to me.

It's SMP not medical school. You would lose quite a bit of money but I can't imagine why one of these schools would hold it against you. At least I can't imagine anyone at my SMP holding this kind of attitude. The whole point is to maximize your chances so if you want to pick and choose the "best" so be it.

Plus, SMPs and the host medical schools use separate "files." i.e. they are legally prevented from sharing confidential information so the medical school wouldn't know you accepted and then declined attending their SMP. Even if by chance they knew, if you simply explained "... I was also accepted at so and so later and after much consideration I choose the later etc... etc" I can't for the life of me think why med admin would consider that a bad thing.

It sounds like you've applied to all three and will receive decisions that don't give you the right time frames, so you'll have to either accept more than 1 at a time or refuse an offer without knowing whether you'll be accepted at the others (it sounds like you don't want to do that from your post).

So, you'll have to accept then reject an offer, and end up in the black book, no matter what.

If by "accept" you mean pay the deposit to hold your spot, I don't see any harm in that. In fact, that is a smart thing to do so that you don't lose your spot while you are deciding. As for the medical school holding a grudge against you for later declining, that seems a little extreme to me. Plus, some of the SMP admission departments are separate from the M.D. departments. What you can do is call each SMP admissions department and ask them politely, therefore you will know for sure rather than listening to random people on SDN (like me).

Oh and if and when you find out for sure, do let us know! 👍

I second that.

Holding more than one post-bacc seat with a deposit while thinking about your options is common practice and won't be seen as a negative. It is an important choice, so it makes sense to weigh your options thoroughly.

The only negative to holding two or more seats is that you are preventing someone on the not chosen program's waiting list from receiving their acceptance. So, once you have decided on your program for sure, it is really nice of you to release your spot ASAP. Someone else will be very happy you did. 🙂
