So..... let's say you get accepted into your in-state school. You are very excited, cant think of a reason why you'd go anywhere else and pay your deposit and accept your seat in the class. Then, out of the blue you are offered an interview invite you didn't anticipate getting. Would the interview offering school have any idea you had already accepted a spot somewhere else? Could you possibly be jeopardizing your initial in state acceptance because you hastily accepted an offer before the deadline? Or is it all fair game until April 15th, and if you're stupid enough to pay a deposit and then not want to attend, you lose your money.

I know someone who paid their deposit for Tufts, but then ended up at UF, so in that case, she was able to withdraw her acceptance.

It should all be fair game until April 15th. You will lose your deposit if you don't go there. The only downside to going to the interview is that if you don't really want to go to that other school you are out the travel money for the interview and the money for the deposit. Other than that, there's really no reason why you shouldn't interview if you are still considering that other school.

Yep. Bottom line - don't send in a deposit until you've heard back from all your schools that you want to hear back from. Before April 15th, you do NOT need to send in that deposit until you have all your information in front of you and have made a choice based on all of that available information.

They can't give away your seat even if you don't pay until after April 15 right? As long as you've notified them by April 15 that you want to go there?

Correct (I believe that is true for all the stateside schools. Ross and SGU have different deadlines I think because they have 2 start dates/year, and they kind of accept on a rolling basis)

Sorry for all the questions, but how do you notify them? Do they send forms or is it just via email or phone call? I just was accepted today and they didn't really tell me details.

I would call/email them to ask for details. It depends on the school. For most schools that require a deposit, I would guess sending in that check +/- response sheet (if they provide you one) or a note saying what it's for should suffice. My school didn't require a deposit so i don't remember what I did. Either a form I filled out and sent back in or an email saying that I'm attending?

You'll get more info in the mail from OSU with a way to accept your position in the class. Congrats again 🙂

Since we're having this conversation....

Does anyone who's already been accepted know what the deposits are for Tufts or Michigan?

I found this on Michigan's accepted students page (link in the acceptance email)

"The non-refundable deposit, $500 for Michigan residents and $1,000 for non-Michigan residents, will be credited to your first semester tuition."

Niiiiice. Thank you!

If my memory serves me correctly, I think it was also $500 for Tufts.

Thanks for all your answers! So the schools won't talk to each other or post a list of students who have accepted spots in their class? Going on another interview couldnt jeopardize the spot I've accepted??? I wouldnt want my acceptance rescinded :/

Wait... you accepted a spot and you're still going on an interview? WHYYYYYY????

Well, it's a bit personal. But let's just say that certain things in my life have been having an influence on my choices and I realized that I'd like to reopen my options if possible.

So, does any one know if I would be violating any policies/rules? And if not, should I be worried about the schools involved finding out?

That seat was yours until April 15 (or whatever that date is) anyway, so I wouldn't worry about it. If I were you, I would try your darndest to let them know on or before that deadline if you are actually no longer going to attend. Obviously you won't be getting that deposit back. But hey, **** happens, and that's why they take that deposit. After your interview, if you don't get into this new school or you decide you don't want to go there, who cares? That was your seat to begin with, it's not like you are holding it from anyone else. If you get into this other school and decide to go there, just tell them before the deadline "oh my bad, sorry, I'm going elsewhere. Keep my cash as a gift." That seat will go to someone on the waitlist, you will have made that person's day, and the school gets an extra $500 or however much you paid. If you get off the waitlist for another school beyond the deadline, same thing. Again, that's what the deposit's for. As long as you're not witholding a seat that you KNOW you're not going to take past the deadline, I don't think you're doing anything wrong.

I don't think you're violating any policies/rules, and I don't think you should be worried about it. It just sucks for you that you jumped the gun and dropped cash where maybe you didn't need to.
