I have been considering applying to Ross and SGU, but I have been wondering about how access to healthcare is on the islands. My main concern is I have a specific prescription medication that I have to be on long term- how feasible is it to keep access to prescription meds over there? Would I have to try to travel with a year's supply? If any Ross or SGU students have any info they can share I'd appreciate it.

I personally have not had to get specific medications filled on the island while attending SGU, but some of my classmates are on specific medications. They usually brought down enough medication to get them through the semester because the island may not carry specific medications as they are limited on what gets shipped to them. This would be something that you would have to research more if the island has your medication or not, but I would recommend bringing your own supply of medication anyways incase they run into shortages. Another thing to think about is if your insurance covers that on island or if they allow you to fill your medications for so many months out. I know many people have issues where their insurance only covers a specific amount of months at a time, so you may want to look into that for authorization purposes to avoid issues.

There are several pharmacies on island, but availability of certain meds varies by what it is. I’m able to find mine on island, but others ship them down or get special approval from their insurance company to have a longer supply brought drown. Medical care and meds are very cheap here compared to the States (you don’t even get charged at the hospital’s ER unless you get hospitalized—like I had to get a large wound sutured and cleaned and it cost nothing) and birth control is over the counter, which is nice. Back home a 30 day supply of my meds costs $30, here I get a three month supply for $20. There is a hospital, a few clinics, and a few specialists on island. I wouldn’t say healthcare is at the level of it at home, but it’s not the worst from my experience. All students are required to have insurance that allows for emergency lifts off island to Miami if needed (the school insurance has this policy if you use the school’s). So in like a very worst case scenario you would be able to be airlifted out. It’s just a safety measure in case there would be situations where very advanced care would be needed, a specialist for whatever it is is not on island, etc.
