Does anyone know what it means when a program has "provisional accreditation?" Do newer programs always have this status, or is it possible to immediately become fully accredited?

It's my understanding that all new programs are granted provisional accreditation.

I think on the second visit if everything is ok.

That should be decided a few months after being formally evaluated. There is a site that lists when programs are due for their next evaluation. I don't know the link off the top of my head, but I have seen it within the last month.

If the program is successful provisional accreditation is awarded after the first visit. Usually godd for two years in EM, not sure if that's universal. The accreditation status of all programs can be found on the public part of this website www.acgme.org. There's also data about when the next site visit is due.

Is there a listing somewhere of programs that have attained accreditation 'with commendation'? The Stony Brook surgery program was awarded this status and the PD said that only the top 6% of programs get it...

I've not heard of this, but I've probably not heard of a lot of things. The ACGME website lists the public info and Stony Brook surgery is listed as continued full which is the highest level. Many more than 6% will have that.

He may be referring to the cycle length, which in this case is 6 years between visits. That sounds very good.
