I am just wondering, with your guys experience, how accurate is FREIDA in its statistics of residents hours. When you go to the online search of programs, it says some info like avg. hours, salary, positions, etc. For example, the IM residency at Yale says there is average 60 hours/ week. Are these statistics very accurate, or no?

even if the information given was ever an accurate representation, that site has not been updated for several years at least

If I recall correctly, this information is provided by the program and may be biased.

I remember looking at a surgery program in the Boston area prior to the work hours changing. When the work hour changes went into effect it dropped from like 120 to 80 in the period of 1 week (which I find unlikely).

You can see when it was last updated when you look at the info listed on each program's page...most a very recent (October 06) at least for the programs I've looked into.

As far as validity goes...it could be false, I think it's always best to ask the residents who are currently in the program.

In agreement with the above responses...

FREIDA is self-report data and is either hardly every updated, updated by an administrative type who doesn't check to see if its changed or is blatant lies.

Your best bet is to talk to current residents - especially residents who aren't interviewing you (ie, ask anesthesia residents how many hours the surgery residents work, etc.) - they are the best source.

another problem is that the hours listed are "averages." in my opinion that means basically nothing...why would I care what the average weekly hours are over the course of a year?? when I was using FREIDA a few years ago, I wanted to know how many hours/week during CALL months....not call months averaged with elective months. and like others have said, the info isn't accurate anyways. I've looked at the profiles of several programs I'm familiar with and none of them were really all that accurate. you gotta talk with the residents to get the info you need.

BUMP

Anyone know if it's been updated since the OP's post? That was in 2007.

Those average work hour estimates are at best inaccurate and at worst blatant lies.
