Is it a ACGME requirement that internal medicine programs provide residents with on call meals or reimbursement for on call meals?
I heard from several people that it was, but I just want to make sure before I try to get my program to implement the rules.
Thanks.

I've never heard of that . . . I guess most places do this anyway, but I don't think it's a ACGME rule. Be nice to find out.

No the ACGME does not deal with feeding residents

From the IM RRC rules:
(3) Residents must have sleeping rooms, lounge, and food facilities during assigned duty hours.
(4) When residents are assigned night duty in the hospital, they must be provided with on-call facilities that are convenient and that afford privacy, safety, and a restful environment with a secure space for their belongings.

From the Institutional rules:
a) Food services: Residents must have access to appropriate food services 24 hours a day while on duty in all institutions.
b) Call rooms: Residents on call must be provided with adequate and appropriate sleeping quarters that are safe, quiet, and private.
c) Security/safety: Appropriate security and personal safety measures must be provided to residents at all locations including but not limited to: parking facilities, on-call quarters, hospital and institutional grounds, and related facilities.

Answer: Food must be available 24/7, but does not need to be provided free of charge.

Here in Texas meal cards are provided to the on-call teams.

What, you too classy for peanut butter and graham crackers and half pint cartons of milk, taken from the ward pantry under the disapproving eyes of the unit secretary?
