New job requires this. I'm well out of date now as it is a stupid requirement for an EM doc. In any case, any thoughts? I saw some sites that say "100 percent online" but I wonder if those are scams.

If your hospital allows it. Worst case scenario is they say no and you have to do some sitdown class.

Most of the time it is non-medical middle age women who are looking at the documents. They have no clue what kind of certification it is, as long as it says "ACLS" on it. I just go for the cheapest online one I can find. I haven't had to take a waste-of-time sit down class in 7 years.

Oh, I agree. Most don't care. But some do. Better to find out before rather than after paying $100.
Mine doesn't require it at all though.

Check with your hospital before doing the online classes -- as a resident for moonlighting I did the online class but they didn't accept it because it wasn't AHA certified and didn't have an in-person skills test.

AngryBirds -
IIRC, you are or were recently working in academics. Is there not someone in your department who is an ACLS instructor?
Couldn't you just ask them to sign a card for you?
ACLS for EM grads is nuts!

I will have an academic position at one university, but this is for a community hospital I'll be working for at the same time.

If they require the in person skills test some places will allow you to do the "classroom portion" online. Then they have you stop by for twenty minutes so you can do the in person skills test.

I always use the ACLS Training Association - ACLS, PALS, BLS Certification & Recertification Online website but I'm sure there are plenty others. It's pretty streamlined and lets me renew BLS,ACLS,PALS and I've never had any questions. I'm due for ATLS but my hospitals don't require it for ABEM where I'm currently located.
What's funny about ATLS is that the people that run it (The ACS) say that we don't need it if we did it in training. Some states require it for Level 1 and 2 trauma centers, but often only the director, not all the docs. Here in Texas, Level 2 doesn't require a current one. Every hospital (except 1) that I've worked at has asked, and I've flat out refused and shown them the information from the state and they've backed down.
ACLS on the other hand, has been a tougher fight, since the AHA uses it as a money making empire and states that everyone should have it, even the janitors.
