Hi. I'm currently an MS3 that is very interested in Internal Medicine. We recently had a talk from a ACP guy who basically talked us into becoming a member since its free for us and to attend this conference (April 23-25 in Philly). I was just curious as to what exactly the benefits are for med students to attend such a conference. I do happen to have that week free which is the only reason I am considering it, however its on the other side of the nation for me. Is it really worth it? Any insight is helpful. Thanks.

Well, you might learn some stuff, but if it's financially onerous for you to go, it certainly isn't necessary. These guys just want to talk up their organizations. It's not a bad idea to join the ACP if you are thinking of going in to internal medicine. You can put it on your residency application. Whether or not you attend this conference is unlikely to affect your future residency match prospects.

I actually never went to an ACP conference, and will be interested to see input from those who have.

Wellll....I'd like to weigh in. I actually think going to the ACP conference is definitely worth it. You can present something that you've done research wise or case report wise. They have different networking opportunities for students where you can meet people at different institutions. I've met quite a few people and I hopefully will be able to use a contact to do an away with her. So we'll see. They also have discounts for MKSAP which I got for my Internal Med Shelf. I think they have other mentoring options as well. They have some journal clubs and other stuff for usage and they do a lot in DC to stop all the cuts for reimbursement.

Thanks for the insight guys. I'm also considering attending this conference as an MS3. How is the turnout for these things? Is it a fairly large gathering? I'm kinda looking forward to it... although not a big fan of Philly.

Haha.. well Philly is alright if you know where to go and all that. Last year in DC there were a good number of students. I think the total number of people is about 8-10k and then students wise.. I wanna say about 200-300.

I just returned from one of the local ACP meetings. I'm a MSIV and I've applied for residency positions already, so I didn't view it as much of a networking event. There were some MSIIs and MSIIIs presenting research, though.

The plenary sessions are actually pretty high-quality, and you can learn some of the new stuff in IM. In addition, you can present your research (that was my major motivation) or present an interesting clinical case with the chance to win an award. As with any organization, there's an element of propaganda, but it's a minimal part of the experience.

Is there a special track for med students specifically? Like a day of a bunch of talks regarding what IM residencies look for in applicants, etc etc.

there's not a specific day. There are research presentations/competitions. There are 4 sessions the Council of Student Members organize. - Mastering the Match, Thriving in your Clerkships, Stump the Professor, and What Medical Students Need to Know About Pharmaceutical Representatives. There's also Mentoring sessions like a breakfast where you can meet Program Directors. ... oh and they have a residency fair. Besides all the cool gadgets and stuff. I thought it was a good time.
